A tracked excavator with hydraulic hammer breaking rock in Chile for the foundation of the Giant Magellan Telescope - a gigantic telescope with a 24.5-meter primary mirror to be housed in a building 22 stories high. This location is where the primary mirror coating chamber pit will be located, used to coat the 8.4-meter mirror segments in aluminum to give them there sheen. In total, 4,000 cubic meters of rock will be removed to pour in the concrete foundations for the GMT.

Danny Thompson and the Challenger 2 at the Bonneville Salt Flats in 2016. This past weekend, the 69-year-old Thompson returned to the flats and set a new land speed record for a piston-powered, wheel-driven vehicle: a top speed of 450.909 mph, and an average of 448.75 mph to set the official record. The Challenger 2 was Danny's father's, Mickey Thompson, built 50 years ago—but Mickey was rained out and didn't get a chance to race the streamliner on the flats. Now his son has resurrected the car and taken it to a new record speed.

In the wee hours of tomorrow morning, at 3:33 a.m. EDT, a Delta IV Heavy is scheduled to launch from Cape Canaveral carrying the Parker Solar Probe on its journey to the sun. Liftoff will look something like the launch in this photo, which is a Delta IV Heavy carrying a spy satellite for the NRO in November 2010 (NROL-32). Photo: United Launch Alliance

Yesterday, we visited the #Boeing Starliner facility at Kennedy Space Center and ran into a few of NASA's newly-assigned Commercial Crew astronauts. Sunita Williams and Josh Cassada will fly the first Starliner mission to the International Space Station in late 2019. We asked them to describe their initial reaction to the incredible news... Titan, better known as Herman the German, is a floating crane built to service Nazi U-boats that was seized by the Allies during the war. The 374-foot-tall, self-propelled crane vessel served at the Long Beach Naval Ship Yard from 1946 to 1994, and then made its way to the Panama Canal where it performs heavy lifts for lock maintenance to this day. Some of the local workers insist that the crane is haunted by Nazi ghosts and refuse to spend time on Herman the German alone.
