Who just gave the Official Park Week Seal of Approval? This seal!
.
It’s #WildWednesday! Did you know young seals migrate south during the winter in search of food? Juveniles are lower in the hierarchy and have a hard time competing for food with the adults, so they venture from their homes in Canada and New England as far south as North Carolina looking for an easier meal. All that swimming can be tiring, so they often take a rest on the sandy beaches along the way. With their big, innocent eyes and smiles under whiskers, seals are attractive and it’s tempting to approach them, but people and their pets should stay at least 150 feet away.

Transportation systems play an integral role in helping the National Park Service achieve its mission of providing safe and enjoyable access to our national treasures. Today, the NPS manages approximately 5,500 miles of paved roads, 7,000 miles of unpaved roads, 1,400 bridges, 60 tunnels, 100 transit systems operating in 65 units (includes 37 interpretive tours), and 17,800 miles of trails (5,000 miles are paved). Transportation professionals work to protect park these resources and provide access by planning, implementing, and managing innovative transportation systems.

The mountain cottontail or Nuttall's cottontail (Sylvilagus nuttallii) is a species of mammal in the family Leporidae. It like a solitary life perhaps because food is a limiting factor and shelter in their environment can be sparse. It is active and on the move all year long, looking for areas with an ample food supply. The animal is crepuscular and feeds in or near sheltering brush. Severe weather limits their ability to gather food. Because food and sometimes moisture is sparse, energy is very important. When the animal is frightened it runs several meters to an area where it can hide and freezes with its ears erect to assess the situation of danger. If the cottontail is further disturbed, it rapidly hops away and tries to trick the predator by running in a semicircular path.

Did you know sea otters have been known to hold onto one another to keep each from drifting apart? Oh no! You had one job! Where’s Carl?
.
Well, maybe it’s safer resting as a group? A group of resting otters is actually called a raft. Researchers have seen concentrations of over 1,000 otters floating together. They will also wrap themselves up in seaweed, forming their floating raft.

I am kitty! Hear me rawr!
.
A bobcat captured and collared before the Woolsey Fire started last November gave birth to four kittens recently. Using VHF radio-telemetry and GPS points from the mother’s collar, biologists from ‪Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area‬ located the young female bobcat in a dense area of vegetation in a large residential backyard in Westlake Village. While the mother was away from her den, her kittens were weighed, measured, and given a general health check by researchers. They were also ear tagged for the purpose of future identification. Mom and babies are all doing well!
