Animal Planet  Welcome to the official Instagram of Animal Planet!

As a British soldier stationed in Afghanistan, @PenFarthing never expected a street dog named Nowzad to change the course of his life. His mission to help dogs and the soldiers who love them led to the creation of @NowzadRescue, the first and only official animal rescue in Afghanistan. In this week’s episode of #DodoHeroes, follow Pen and the rescue as they help reunite a litter of puppies with the US solider who rescued them, all while aiding helpless dogs in a country where pets are seen as taboo. Don’t miss #DodoHeroes Saturday at 9p on Animal Planet.

For the longnecked giraffe, the term “necking” has a whole new meaning. Giraffes live in two kids of journeys, either as family of related females and their children or as a group of unrelated rambunctious adult males. In male journeys, these gentle giants establish social hierarchies through “necking,” or neck-based combat. Giraffe mating rituals are definitely one for the books. Male giraffes will follow around females, hitting their heads on female butts to smell for pheromones. This may result in a LONG 400+ day pregnancy. Calves emerge the size of full grown adult humans!

#Koko, a gorilla born in captivity in 1971, learned to sign more than 1,000 words and understood spoken English. She also lovingly fostered kittens and mourned the loss of several friends, including Robin Williams. Her legacy, demonstrating the cognitive and emotional abilities of gorillas, will be long lasting. R.I.P. Koko. 1971-2018.

The great white shark lives in the costal waters of ALL major oceans. With no known natural predators (except for the occasional killer whale), these big fish are the world’s largest known predatory marine animals. These powerful swimmers reach speeds of up to 25mph and, when they’re hungry, can launch themselves 10 ft in the air. Watch out seals, these hunters are no joke! See @drchrisbrown tag a shark this Sunday at 8P on #VetGoneWild

Warthogs are the ONLY pig species that has adapted to grazing and living in the Savanna. This pig is one powerful digger! Using its snout and feet, it can burrow into the ground for protection. Don’t mess with them, though, once they’re in their burrow, they are very protective of their personal space.

The Komodo dragon is one massive lizard. Since there are no other carnivorous animals that live on the islands where they dwell, their numbers have increased tremendously. They’re some of the last-remaining giant animals that roamed before humans. Giant ground sloths and giant beavers may have been wiped out by human interference, but these 10-ft lizards remain the rulers of the Indonesian Islands.

Koalas may look cuddly in photos, but in person, males give off a potent odor. This pungent smell is a tool male koalas use to mark their territory. With a quick rub of the scent glands on his chest a koala can really stink up the place. 🐨 Join the Bee family in rescuing koalas on #dodoheroes this Saturday at 9P.

The red-eyed tree frog has evolution beat! A single glance at a predator leaves them scared, giving these little guys time to escape certain doom. Lucky for tree frogs, they’re also great jumpers and can catch themselves with sticky pads on each of their toes. With startling eyes and powerful legs, red-eyed tree frogs prove what survival of the fittest means.
