It's been 3 years since the devastating floods struck Serbia and our volunteers worked tirelessly around the clock to collect, load and transport over 100 tons of urgent disaster relief aid to those in need. It was a herculean effort by our organization and the Serbian diaspora around the world, as we shipped off 9 containers by sea, and one, carrying the most urgent supplies, by airplane from Toronto directly into Belgrade.
As the media buzz faded, the arduous work of loading tons of humanitarian supplies into containers went well into the summer. One of our hardest working volunteers was Snezana Kovacevic, who came with her three young daughters to our warehouse in Toronto, every day for a month, to help load the containers. Sadly, it is now Snezana who needs OUR help.
She has been diagnosed with Chronic pancreatitis, a disease characterized by irreversible damage to the pancreas that alters the organ's normal structure and functions. To make matters worse, last month she was also diagnosed with Gastroparesis, a medical condition consisting of a partial paralysis of the stomach, resulting in abnormally slow digestion. The mixture of these two conditions combined with Snezana's type 1 diabetes causes her unbearable abdominal pain.
Her daughters have launched an online campaign to help the family deal with medical expenses as Snezana awaits a pancreas transplant. A single mother whose ability to work has been impaired cannot cover these costs alone. Snezana and her family were there for the Serbian people in their time of need, it is now our turn to come together to help her!
