Normal Dedicated to all Vets of WWII
ww2showcase War Prizes -- This dashing Focke-Wulf Fw 190A-5 arrived in the states in January of 1944 and was overhauled by the CEAU (Captured Enemy Aircraft Unit) in Washington D.C. After the aircraft was repaired, repainted and had its armaments removed, it went through vigorous testing against the F6F Hellcat and F4U Corsair (which is strange because the F4U did not see any action in the ETO). The general overview by the three US pilots who test flew it, was that the 190 was a delight to fly and was well engineered, but was not equal to the likes of its competing American fighters in combat. They claimed the only advantage the 190 had was its rate of climb and firepower, but it could be outmaneuvered by the other aircraft. 13h

Normal Dedicated to all Vets of WWII
ww2showcase Long Lost Footage -- This beautiful Supermarine Spitfire pictured in color would become the subject of a short but sweet documentary called "Spitfire 944". Lt. John S. Blyth flying with the USAAF's 14th Photo Reconnaissance Squadron smoothly crash landed this aircraft in late 1944 after the landing gear failed to deploy upon his return from a mission. 61 years later, Blyth would finally be surprised with and shown the recently discovered 16mm footage of his crash land which he had never seen, nor never even knew existed. If you have some time to kill today, look it up on Youtube certainly worth the watch. 4d

pto_1942 Grounding the Empire

Raw, declassified footage of a USAAF strafing run on a Japanese airfield, likely on the home islands of Japan in 1945.

These types of raids on the Japanese homeland began in mid-February 1945. They were primarily carried out by Navy and Marine aircraft of Task Force 58 to ground enemy planes that could threaten American personnel during the landings at Iwo Jima. These rads yielded 341 kills and 160 destroyed Japanese aircraft on the ground for the Navy and Marine aviators of TF-58.

U.S. Army Air Force presence on Iwo Jima began in March, 1945 with P-51 Mustangs of the VII Fighter Command. They carried out independent attacks on airfields on the Japanese home islands beginning on June 16 when 57 Mustangs attacked Kanoya Airfield in Kyushu. By the end of the Kyushu raid, the Mustangs had destroyed 64 Japanese aircraft and damaged another 180 on the ground. Despite these numbers, the raids were considered unsuccessful.

In July, the VII Fighter Command's mission shifted from bomber escort to a ground attack role. This was brought about by a lack of Japanese resistance to bombing raids. The Mustangs instead focused on destroying Japanese aircraft being held in reserve to attack the expected allied invasion fleet. Japanese fighters were rarely encountered in the air, but American pilots still had to contend with anti-aircraft fire and barrage balloons while attacking the airfields.

By the end of the war, pilots of the VII Fighter Command had conducted 51 ground attack raids, 41 of which were considered successful. The Mustangs are estimated to have destroyed 1,062 aircraft ad 254 ships along with a significant amount of Japanese supplies and material. The VII Fighter Command sacrificed 91 pilots and 157 Mustangs in their share of the mission to put the final coffin nails in the Japanese empire.

rob_dunk23 What I'm currently reading tonight: I'm reading Aces of the 325th Fighter Group, written by Thomas G. Ivie for Osprey Publishing's Aircraft of the Aces series. It tells the story of the American fighter pilots who achieved "ace" status while flying the P-40 Warhawk, the P-47 Thunderbolt, and finally the P-51 Mustang with the 325th Fighter Group during World War II. The 325th Fighter Group, known as the "Checkertail Clan" due to its black and yellow tail markings, was one of the most successful USAAF fighter groups during World War II, claiming 537 aerial victories against the Luftwaffe, Regia Aeronautica, and Axis air forces in the Balkans, with no fewer than 202 being credited to the 325th Fighter Group's 27 aces. #AcesOfTheFighterGroup #ThomasGIvie #AircraftOfTheAces #ospreypublishing #usaaf #unitedstatesarmyairforce #american #fighterpilots #flyingace #P40Warhawk #P47Thunderbolt #P51Mustang #books #reading #nonfiction #currentlyreading #carmelindiana #unitedstates 4d
