nundra 'Australia Day' in Australia is 'celebrated' on the date that European boats invaded this country & commenced a bloody campaign of genocide against the Aboriginal inhabitants. This has continued over the years into the present. For example: loss of culture, poor health, sanctioned social security payments (paternalism), racism, poverty in Aboriginal communities, dispossession & forced separation of families. Many Australians believe the date to celebrate the good things about Australia should be changed. Instead, Jan. 26 should be a day to commemorate & acknowledge the horrors our indigenous people have endured in the 226 years since their sovereign lands were brutally & illegally occupied. One of the election mantras our recently elected conservative government used was 'Stop the boats' - an inhumane anti-refugee platform, which saw them elected.. Ironic. Considering we are a nation of invaders! 6mon
  •   walkingwithmabel I didn't know thats what Australia day was all about...definitely not something to be celebrated :-( 6mon
  •   dekchair Exactly. That's a very succinct, accurate and erudite version of history. Shame, shame, shame. 6mon
  •   nundra @dekchair Yep.. Such an insult to have it on this day! 6mon
  •   nundra @walkingwithmabel Yes, sadly many ppl don't know the history.. Or the present! 6mon
  •   quiet.riot unfortunately all 'civilised' nations are guilty of many of the points you mentioned. this is why i will never understand patrotism in any form 6mon
  •   nundra @kial13 Yes, colonisation seems to have been an unfortunate, inevitable wave that washed over earth.. However to rub salt in that still recent wound is unnecessary & highly insensitive.. 6mon
  •   wilhelminavd Thank you... Interesting .. True 6mon
  •   quintanarose I agree, the native Americans here have been screwed continuously and I don't see the end in sight. So wrong. I believe the colonizers are trying to wipe out the evidence. Wipe out their shame. 6mon
