Normal Jehovah's Witness
jw_united_in_truth ‘If transfusion medicine is so fraught with dangers,’ you might wonder, ‘why is blood still used so extensively, particularly when there are alternatives?’ One reason, doctors are simply reluctant to change treatment methods or are unaware of therapies that are currently used as alternatives to transfusions. According to an article in the journal Transfusion, “physicians make transfusion decisions based upon their past teaching, enculturation, and ‘clinical judgment.’” One of Jehovah's Witnesses recounts: "Two of my children were involved in an automobile accident in 1998. My son’s leg was crushed. He stated repeatedly that he did not want blood! But the hospital wasn’t equipped for bloodless surgery. He was transferred to another hospital, but the hospital staff were unwilling to operate before his hematocrit reached 35 (It had bottomed out at 8.1). They developed a laissez-faire attitude, as if they were waiting to see if he would die. However, as they applied bloodless strategies — elevating his leg, administering erythropoietin, and so forth — his hematocrit climbed to 35.8! The surgery was successful, but the delay in treatment left him with much permanent damage." Nevertheless, “a growing number of hospitals are offering an alternative: ‘bloodless’ surgery,” reported The Wall Street Journal. “Originally developed to accommodate Jehovah’s Witnesses,” states the journal, “the practice has gone mainstream, with many hospitals promoting their bloodless-surgery programs to the general public.” Hospitals around the world are discovering numerous benefits, particularly to patients, when implementing strategies that curtail the use of blood transfusions. Currently, thousands of doctors are treating patients without resorting to transfusions. Furthermore, under the heading “‘Bloodless’ Surgery,” Maclean’s magazine reported that the quest for bloodless surgery was “spurred both by concerns over the future supply of donated blood — and by many patients’ fears of getting a disease virus from a transfusion.” Thanks to the research by innovative doctors, not only Jehovah’s Witnesses but many others have benefited. 22h

jw_united_in_truth “Blood transfusions with banked human blood may do more harm than good for a majority of patients,” says a report from Duke University Medical Center, in Durham, North Carolina, U.S.A. Studies have found that transfused patients have “higher incidences of heart attack, heart failure, stroke and even death” than those who were not transfused. “Nitric oxide in red blood cells begins breaking down almost immediately after red blood cells leave the body.” Nitric oxide is crucial to keeping blood vessels open and thus allowing red cells to ferry oxygen to the body’s tissues. "Millions of patients are apparently receiving transfusions with blood that is impaired in its ability to deliver oxygen.” Too, the textbook Modern Blood Banking and Transfusion Practices by Dr. Denise M. Harmening, states: “Delayed hemolytic transfusion reaction” can occur “in a patient who has previously been sensitized by transfusion, pregnancy, or transplant.” In such cases, the antibodies that cause a patient to react adversely to a transfusion are “not detectable by standard pretransfusion methods.” Dailey’s Notes on Blood mentions hemolysis “can be triggered even when only a small amount of incompatible ... blood is administered. When renal shutdown does occur the patient is slowly poisoned because the kidneys cannot remove impurities from the blood.” Also, Transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI), first reported in the early 1990’s, is a life-threatening immune reaction following a blood transfusion. It is now known that TRALI causes hundreds of deaths each year. Experts, however, suspect that the numbers are much higher, as many health-care workers do not recognize the symptoms. Although it is not clear what causes the reaction, according to the magazine New the blood that causes it “appears to come primarily from people who have been exposed to a variety of blood groups in the past, such as . . . people who have had multiple transfusions.” One report states that TRALI is now near the top of the list for causes of transfusion-related deaths in the United States and Britain. 2d

  •   dcepjw Wow! Great info! @jw_united_in_truth 2d
  •   3marchbabies New info for us, old for Jehovah! So happy to have a god who cares for us and wants only the best for us. Even if we don't fully understand why sometimes. 2d
  •   fun4jwonly Even though we don't need scientific backup to worship or obey Jehovah, it always proves that Jehovah asks things from us that benefits us. 1d
  •   jw_united_in_truth I've always appreciated that too. @fun4jwonly I like how Jehovah's organization took a Bible based stance on blood transfusions before medical science started really publicizing its harmful effects. So, like you said, we trust Jehovah knows best and are willing to follow his Word first and foremost. 1d
