yougrowgirl What I actually bought at the 50% off #thriftscorebooklist Paperbacks were 50cents each! I think I may have 3 of these but wasn't sure and didn't want to risk it since the deal was so good. And yes, I did buy MY OWN BOOK but it was only 50 cents! I pay a hell of a lot more than that when I buy from the publisher. People think that as the author, you just get the books for free. Not so! You typically pay half the cover price, sometimes more, depending on the publisher. 2w

yougrowgirl I bought these 3. I was very tempted by a few others that had amazing 60s and 70s era covers. #thriftscorebooklist 2w

yougrowgirl A psychoanalyst cleared out their bookshelves. Tons of books here on psychoanalysis, R.D Laing, etc 2w
  •   pennyrhyme That 2w
  •   pennyrhyme Whoops! Meant to say, that's a whole lotta Laing 2w
  •   yougrowgirl @pennyrhyme I've never seen so much. I bought a few 2w
  •   yougrowgirl @pennyrhyme I've bee interested in his work since I read The Politics of Experience in university as a part of a class called Irrationality. It was my first class of my first year and while it started off badly (RE the guy who threatened to shoot me) it ended up being one of the best classes of those years. My TA let me do my final essay as a comic. Which I regretted because it was an incredible amount of work. Far, far more than just writing. Ha! 2w
  •   yougrowgirl @pennyrhyme I also can't think about R.D Laing without being reminded of this Ken Loach film I saw in 2007 called Family Life. I'd love to see it again even though I found it painful to watch. In it this girl ends up in an institution and there is a dr who is obviously based on RD Laing http://www.makinghappy.com/archived/001116.php 2w
  •   pennyrhyme What?! No way! That is awesome. Even more awesome that it was That Class. And now I am trying to imagine an R.D. Laing thing as a comic and it is blowing my mind (tho I know that's not what you did, just sayin' is all) 2w
  •   pennyrhyme I read Politics of Experience a few years ago and it pretty much exploded my brain. I can't imagine any of my college professors assigning something like that! Waaaaaaaay too subversive. 2w
  •   pennyrhyme PS and now I have to see Family Life, obvs 2w

yougrowgirl I had to get this for my self directed Caribbean Lit course. #thriftscorebooklist Also, my mother worked as a domestic for a time. She came to Canada from Barbados. I remember going to some of the rich peoples' houses with her while she cleaned. I was surprised by the quantity and quality of the kids' toys and how they had whole rooms just for playing. 3w

  •   mrbrownthumb I love the series. Never knew it was a book. 2mon
  •   yougrowgirl @mrbrownthumb Yeah, it was a book first, but this was my first time seeing it. Gonna start reading when I finish one of my current reads. I was also a huge fan of the Homicide series but haven't read that book either. Did you watch The Wire? I noticed a bunch of characters were based on people from The Corner. 2mon
  •   mrbrownthumb I liked Homicide too and The Wire. It's funny because when we were recording the podcast I wanted to bring up a scene from The Corner that resonates with me and what we talked about, but didn't know how many out there were familiar with this. Especially since it's been eclipsed by The Wire in pop culture. 2mon
  •   yougrowgirl @mrbrownthumb I have to admit that I forget a lot of it. Partly because it's been so many years since I watched it and because I started to get it confused with characters from the Wire that were based on people in the Corner. 2mon

yougrowgirl #thriftscorebooklist I have read Lynda Barry's Cruddy several times, but when I see it, I buy it for a friend who has not had the pleasure. The Joan Didion is new to me. 2mon
  •   pennyrhyme Have you read Salvador? I think that one's my favorite of hers (Didion, that is) 2mon
  •   gardengal628 Didion is fantastic 2mon
  •   amandamuffski I Didion. Year of Magical Thinking was amazing. 2mon

  •   nckhella Daring Greatly is one of my favorite books. Great score. 2mon
  •   noddyboom Ditto on Daring Greatly ::: 2mon
  •   yougrowgirl @nckhella @noddyboom I bought it for my Kindle when it first came out but had been considering a hard copy so I was happy to find this. 2mon
  •   noddyboom Hard copies are so great. In my house, they often get dog-eared and underlined and filled with notes & scribbles. You can't do that on a kindle in quite the same way. Happy for you! 2mon
  •   yougrowgirl @noddyboom I feel the same way. When I got the kindle I thought I'd stop buying hard copies of novels and anything with 1 colour printing but turns out I like dog earring and underlining and I need hard copies of anything that I intend to read more than once. 2mon

  •   pennyrhyme Hey! Trish is from here! Real nice lady but very perky (we consulted her once about a behavior problem Bub had) 3mon
  •   yougrowgirl @pennyrhyme I read this book at the time we got Molly and I found it helpful in understanding how my emotions and actions effect her 3mon
  •   yougrowgirl @littlepurplecow Indeed it is! 3mon
  •   buffalorach Were adopting a rescue pit and she's coming home in a week. This is on my reading list! You always find great scores at the thrift stores. You should open an online used book shop! 3mon
  •   yougrowgirl @buffalorach The problem is that shipping books between Canada and the US is CRAZY expensive. We don't have special media rates. This is why I rarely sell my own books directly. I sell at the places where I give talks but the cost of shipping is more than the retail price of the books! 3mon
  •   joelle_hoverson Best book about dogs ever!! 3mon
