Will we in the West realize our potential or will we sleep in the comfort of our affluence with apathy and indifference murmuring softly in our ears? Fifteen thousand people dying needlessly every day from AIDS, TB, and malaria. Mothers, fathers, teachers, farmers, nurses, mechanics, children. This is Africa's crisis. That its not on the nightly news, that we do not treat this as an emergency - that's our crisis.

  • jeremyhilliard Haha @rlujanloveless - it's funny that you bring that part out of Bono's words... I paused over that part of his quote too and wanted to alter it a bit but didn't;). I agree with you though, there is a constant tension as it relates to battling poverty. For those that desire to act, on one hand we want to do good at any cost. This comes from a good heart, but can obviously result in a bit of a blunder at times. On the other is to think creatively and correctly in the best ways to empower individuals without creating a rift between 'us and them,' and stripping them of dignity. When I finish reading Bono's words though, I feel that there isn't room for a cop out... People need to engage with this. You know? Skype soon?   1w
  • gleegz Bono is the worst. Clueless about the underdevelopment of the global South and an absolute hypocrite. It's not up to him or us to "save" Africa, it's up to us to reject the global structures that disadvantage it. But Bono's more than happy with the status quo, he won't even pay his taxes in Ireland. Rather go to tax havens where - surprise! - corrupt African leaders keep their money too.   1w
