valynbaluyot If comics is your thing and if you want to know how it is here in the Philippines, then you better attend the Youthsome Yarns to Yearn workshop by The Lopez Museum and Library, with speakers from the industry, Adam David and Jose Nicolas. Lets help this growing part of modern literature in the country. #philippineart #letsgoarts 10h

ciarskynhutch Easter Greetings ! "Salubong"

Salvador Juban
Oil on Canvas
1970
30 x 30 inches

Juban, one of the proponents of the Angono School of Art, was one of Carlos "Botong" Francisco's main assistants during the time the National Artist was painting his historic large scale murals. A Philippine tradition, folk Christianity and different facets of religious devotion are depicted in this 1970 artwork. "Salubong" refers to the traditional celebration of the meeting of the Risen Christ and the Blessed Mother after the Resurrection. The pre-dawn procession starts on opposite ends of the church, and participants are separated by gender. Womenfolk of the village follow the image of the veiled Blessed Mother Mary, while men of the village follow the image of the Risen Christ. Once the two processions meet in the middle, a young girl from the village dressed as an angel typically removes the dark veil from the Blessed Mother, and this symoblizes their glorious reunification. A Hallelujah chorus is customarily played to signal the start of mass and greet Easter morning.

atty_regie This National Artist Bencab's masterpiece portrays his favorite solitary figure of a scavenger which he has christened as "Sabel." "Sabel is a melancholic symbol of dislocation, despair and isolation--the personification of human dignity threatened by life's vicissitudes, and the vast inequities of Philippine society." 1w
