movietrivia99 One of Guillermo Del Toro's favorite quotes is (The tyrant's reign ends with his death, but the martyr's reign starts with his death) by Danish philosopher & poet (Soren Kierkegaard) Del Toro said that the qoute is the essence of the film.
Ivana Baquero (Ofelia) was too old to play the lead part originally written for an 8 or 9 year-old, but Guillermo del Toro was so impressed by her that he revised the script to accommodate the 11-year-old actress. He sent her comics and fairy tales to help her get more into the atmosphere of Ofelia.
Del Toro compiles books full of notes and drawings about his ideas before turning them into films, something he regards as essential to the process. He left years worth of notes for Pan's in the back of a cab. He thought it was the end of the project. The cab driver found them tracked him down and returned them. Del Toro was convinced that this was a blessing and it made him even more determined to complete the film.
The English subtitles were translated and written by Guillermo del Toro himself. He lost trusts in translators after encountering problems with his previous subtitled movies. Stephen King attended a screening of the film and sat next to Guillermo. Del Toro said that King squirmed when the Pale Man chased Ofelia. Hollywood producers offered double the budget if Del Toro would make the movie in English. Del Toro repeatedly said No & didn't want any compromise in the storyline to suit the "market needs".
Del Toro gave up his entire salary, including back-end points, to see this film finalized just the way he wanted it. The film takes place in Spain between May & June of 1944. Five years after the Spanish Civil War. Del Toro said that Pan's Labyrinth addresses and continues themes related to & is a spiritual successor to his earlier film (The Devil's Backbone) which came out in 2001. In Spain, Sergi Lopez (Captain Vidal) is actually considered a melodramatic & comedic actor.

  •   movietrivia99 The ruined town seen during the opening sequence of the film is the old town of Belchite Zaragoza, in Aragon, Spain, which was also used by Terry Gilliam for (The Adventures of Baron Munchausen) The town was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War and never rebuilt. Pan's received a 22 minutes applause at the Cannes Film Festival. Doug Jones was the only American on the set, and the only one who didn't speak Spanish.  Jones had to memorize not only his own lines in Spanish but also Ivana Baquero's (Ofelia) lines so he knew when to speak his next line.
It took five hours for Jones to get into The Pale Man costume. Once he was in it, he had to look out the nose holes to see where he was going. He said that the Pan suit on the other hand was the most comfortable. Doug Jones also potrayed (Abe Sapien) in the film Hellboy. The captain's room is made to look like the inside of his father's watch, which Guillermo del Toro says represents his troubled mind. The Faun addresses Ofelia with the pronoun "vos", which in Spain is used to refer to someone for whom the speaker has great respect.
In 2007, this film became one of the few fantasy films ever nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Oscars.
The film is only called "Pan's Labyrinth" in America, other English-speaking countries. Everywhere else it's called "The Labyrinth of the Faun."
Actor Manolo Solo who plays (Garces) almost died when one of the horses fell on him. Pan's is the first Latin film to be nominated in the category of Best Film in a Foreign Language at the Academy Awards. Bjork was so affected by this film that after seeing it, she went home and wrote the song "Pneumonia". Parents who brought small children to the theaters in Mexico placed signs on the posters warning about graphic violence 12h
