ilong4you You are my pillar of strength.... This 11th century pillar at Chennakesava temple at Somanathapura temple is amazing. Without the modern implements, people of the ancient and medieval world were able to carve precisely.
Even if you considered a rudimentary turning lathe, mounting and rotating this massive rock for carving itself would be an engineering feat in 11th century.

ilong4you Bramhagiri jungle walk.

My Love is like a forest. First looks green from a distance. As you go closer, you will start seeing different hues of green. As you get in and walk along those unpaved paths, you will start noticing the myriad of colors, some extreme greens some shades of reds and oranges.
Love is not monolithic emotion. Discover the myriad of emotions which makes up to be love. #Karnataka #India #IndyaChalo #Poem #poetry #writing #love #emotion

ilong4you Cicada nymph.

This support ugly and dangerous looking critter was found in the coffee plantation I was staying at Madikeri or Coorg.
At that time I really did not know what it was. I did not post this for a long time as I was not sure what it was (not that I am 100% sure even now)
Buy after much researching, I believe that is Cicada in nymph stage. Probably after a couple of hours, the adult cicada breaks this exoskeleton and emerges out.

Had I known this at that time, probably I would have waited for that emerging.

ilong4you Kaidala is a small village close to the town of Tumkur. About 10 miles, I guess.

Kaidala has one of the most beautiful statues of Lord Vishnu, called Chennakesava belonging to Hoysala era.
The young priest offered prayers and explained the intricate designs of the idol and stories associated with the temple. It is one of the most intricately sculpted idol, life size idol of Chennakesava.

Unlike other idols in other temples, this is a truly 3D sculpture without a back plane.
Here you can see how intricately sculpted the idol is. A thin cost wire inserted between the rings on the fingers of the idol! The vertical shaft going down is one of the weapons used by Vishnu called "Gadha" the mace. And Vishnu is often called " Shankha Chakra Gadhadhara" Lord holding sea shell, mace and disc.

  •   baublebob Lol.....India captivates. But if india became too much, i just sped off on the motorbike. ;-) 3w
  •   baublebob Ok so i looked up nagalapura. I see it is closer to hampi. But maybe its architecture is more related to belur and halebed 3w
  •   ilong4you @baublebob yes. Geographical proximity is of not much importance in India. You know it by now. Just few miles distance, cultures and languages differ entirely. Hampi and Badami are even closer. But the styles are even widely differ. Badami is the birthplace of North Indian temple architecture. Where as Hampi excelled in Davidian /Vijayanagara style. 3w
  •   ilong4you @baublebob I don't blame you if, at times you felt like running away. 3w
  •   baublebob Badami and Aihole were so much fun!!!! 3w
  •   ilong4you @baublebob I had prepared itinerary for a colleague of Badami and other places. He loved the trip. Especially Dambal. 3w
  •   oliephase Awesome. That awesome 3w

Huge black stone pillars inside the Kedareshwara temple at Nagalapura is topped in four direction, four triangular designs of Mythical Lion
I guess there is an archeological term for that, which escapes me now.

  •   inst_a_mit Mythical Lion or The Kirtimukha is often used as a decorative motif surmounting the pinnacle of a temple or the image of a deity, especially in South Indian architecture. This face is sometimes assimilated to, or confused with, another sculptural element, the lion face (Simhamukha). However, in order to be a Kirtimukha it has to be engaged in swallowing, for the Kirtimukha is the figure of the "all consuming" This monstrous face with bulging eyes sits also as an embellishment over the lintel of the gate to the inner sanctum in many Hindu temples signifying the reabsorption that marks the entry into the temple. Mostly it is only a face, although in some places its arms are portrayed as well. 3w
  •   ilong4you @inst_a_mit Thank you so much for the detailed explanation. It is beautifully explained. Please keep writing explanations where ever I have been sketchy or been wrong or totally omitted. I will be ever grateful. 3w

Intricately sculpted legs of a Bharathanatyam dancer. You can observe many many extraordinary details in this sculpture.
