karlstraub John Coltrane, "Russian Lullaby." My dad had this record (probably bought it when it came out in '58) when I was a kid-- I still remember being fascinated by the crude Prestige graphics and font, and studying the liner notes like they were ancient Egyptian scrolls. Red Garland, Paul Chambers, Art Taylor-- these were mythical figures to me. 4d
  •   m_ellem I have and play this occasionally. Not sure what it is, but jazz albums have a "art" quality that have stood the test of time. My dad, RIP, left behind a handful of boxes of his beloved jazz albums. At the time, my mom simply stored them away as I was not old enough to appreciate. In my early teens, she finally gave the boxes to me. I still remember just pulling out album, after album and just looking at them. Neat memory. Thanks for sharing. @karlstraub 4d
  •   karlstraub @m_ellem There's something about those damn records-- and something about the fact that your dad bought them when they came out-- I had a stack of my dad's to go through too-- although he was still alive, so I would wait til he wasn't around. 4d
  •   karlstraub @marzdilla_ My feeling is that a lot of other great Coltrane albums get all the attention-- and humbler early ones like this, that are like a shot of lightning to the brain-- are not always remembered. 4d
  •   marzdilla_ Yeah because I don't know how many edition they have of love supreme @karlstraub 4d
  •   karlstraub @marzdilla_ That album is beautiful, of course-- but for me it's not "better" or more important than this one. I like to imagine Trane counting this tune off and the players just steaming ahead like maniacs, then taking a sandwich break. 4d
  •   marzdilla_ Yep I agree 4d

karlstraub John Coltrane, tenor break on "Vodka." Nice blowing date with Lester Young-esque tenor player Paul Quinichette. Coltrane on Prestige is always great-- you can hear him working through his sheets of sound period. Bonus--Mal Waldron on piano and compositions. 5d
  •   karlstraub @sujinjang1987 Good stuff! 5d
  •   47jazzclub That's very cool 5d
  •   karlstraub @47jazzclub thanks! 5d
  •   efr2012 Anything Coltrane for me. I'm not divided about his early vs later sounds. 4d
  •   karlstraub @efr2012 Don't get me wrong-- I dig all of it! I just get frustrated by the notion that the later stuff is spiritual and profound, the implication being that a Prestige blowing date is neither. But while I love the Prestige stuff, I also love the One Up, One Down album, etc. I've never heard any Coltrane I didn't like. (When Dolphy's with him, I like him even better!) 4d
  •   efr2012 Amen! And a special mention re Waldron. 4d
  •   karlstraub @efr2012 Yes-- he doesn't get enough respect. 4d
