  •   sgallivanmit1500 Google is the most commonly used and dominant search engine in the world. It's secret algorythms allow for the most specific, most used, and most relevant internet pages to be displayed for the user. It's dominance, success and marketing (whether for youtube, phones, GPS) has allowed it to become more than just a tool. The percentage of users that use Yahoo, Ask Jeeves and etc have fluttered and Google has exerted its dominance through its marketing but also through it's ability to become a globalized tool and global financial stock. Students and people rarely use libraries today as with the search engine and boundless internet, one no longer has to search floors, aisles, book #'s, or for any information longer than one second. It is an automated library. The google algorythm is like fordism as it uses other sites, searchable keywords, ads and other criteria to manage, find and rank sites. Therefore, Google also creates a bureaucracy within the internet as a whole. It chooses which site is best for search "x" and then ranks all the other pages below that based on the latter mentioned criteria. This is why almost always when one searches anything like "technology" for example, Wikipedia tends to be the first page. Wikipedia has the most Searchable keywords...but one thing Google is unable to do is filter quality. Wikipedia is a user based, user written page...there is no fact checking, academic checks or professional peer reviews. So in a Google makes life easier and information easier to get through automoation, rationlizes our searches based on the automated algorythm, uses a set of search criteria then to rank and therefore bureaucratize the internet and its pages as a whole. Secondly, through it's ability to invest and spend time in other areas such as phones, GPS systems, youtube and etc it develops a capitalist enviroment...which the user is constantly buying into its product, sometimes without even knowing. 1w

adamhucklemit this image clearly displays the modern
assembly line, and the role that technology has within the line. As you can
see, no people are present in the photo as machines have taken over the role of
the human. Each machine has a specific function and task for each car that
comes through, revealing signs of Frederick taylors scientific management. One
has to wonder, if technology continues to progress, will more and more jobs be
occupied by a machine rather than a person? #mit1500 #mit1500_009 #fordism #scientificmanagement

hdodickmit1500 The other day my dad anxiously decided he wanted to buy a new car. When the dealership told him his car would be manufactured somewhere across the world and ready for pick up in 3 days he was shocked. The dealership went on to quote the word "FORDISM" and explained exactly what it meant. They taught my father that they built their company based of a manufacturing philosophy to increase their productivity by using conveyor assembly lines, and divide work into small tasks. He explained how nothing is hand-made and everything is made through machines which leaves workers to produce the same task over and over again. This is a perfect representation of the standardization of a product. This dealership personally outlined major points of FORDISM that they use; cutting down man power in order for the factory to operate, deskilling labor itself, and cutting down the costs of production. alyssa_mit1500 when I went to subway yesterday in the UCC I realized I was witnessing fordism at it's finest. the employees at this subway have very specific, mindless tasks. I spoke to a person who took my order, another prepared and toasted the bun, another added veggies and sauce, another wrapped the sub, and finally a cashier rang in my order. none of the employees were talking to one another and my sub was ready in record timing! #fordism #mit1500 @ta_alanna 2mon

reneemadill This is a comical meme that I've come across before that plays upon the intense standardization of the Western schooling system along with the methods of testing. It touches upon the, frankly, ridiculousness of the expectations for every student to succeed in the same method. The elephant, monkey, and fish could all represent different backgrounds of students that attend university! #mit1500 #mit1500_08 @ta_ramon 2mon

jillharris1500 Machines aren't properly cleaned. Someone doesn't wash their hands. All it takes is one mistake and it could cost hundreds of people their lives. Contamination is a huge hazard in the food industry, especially in today's age with companies centralizing on automation in factories to maximize efficiency in production. Today's economy is all about mass production and the speed at which a cooperation can get something produced in order to reach a large consumer base. Nowadays, it's not uncommon to hear about mass food recalls, and while often people won't give it a second thought when reaching for a well-known brand, reports in the news about people dying from e-coli contamination makes one stop to realize how much trust you give to these big name companies to keep your family safe and healthy. It really makes you think about how irrational the rationalized can become.

  •   doctorbatmanwho I watched a study a couple years back about noodle factories. When texting the finished noodles they found a trace of rat bone in every batch. They didn't recall it, they never do. Rodents often get stuck in the machines and end up in your food. Gross. That's why I like making homemade pasta. It's actually simple to make but people like efficency over quality. 2mon

  •   alissamelton Don't know you, but came across this post. My two sons, ages 4 and 17 months, almost lost their lives last spring from contaminated ground beef at a restaurant. E. coli led to HUS, which led to a host of problems, including kidney failure. So, I agree with your post 100%. The realities of the greed in our food industry is scary. 1w

misscchen_ It was interesting to see the extent fordism has grown since the 20th century. Companies use to rationalize by producing in the efficient factory line, with each section specializing in one task. However, I noticed in current day, that even two completely different brands source parts from the same "YYK" zipper company. So now, the factory line not efficient enough for us. We must take Fordism further, and rationalize further, by making one company that solely creates the one tiny part. By taking the concept of Fordism to the extremes, this intense specialization allows society to maximize each company's comparative advantage, and also allowing companies to capitalize on economies of scale. All while increasing production flow for consumers. Fordism seems to be on a perpetual mission to rationalize, which society encourages as it satiates our consumeristic tendencies.

At the very end of the film, Samantha turns out to be in love with more than 600 people, not just Theodore. He was never aware and thought of her as his own. In the end, consumers of the OS' can't customize them even though when they first purchase it, they are told they can personalize their OS. It follows with one of the aspects of fordism, how consumers have little choice in how products turn out. #fordism #mit1500 #mit1500_04

margomit1500 Conveyor belt sushi restaurants are a great example of fordism with food. While this is not an assembly line for the production of the sushi, it forces the attributes of fordism onto the customers, not just the workers. This system helps consumers get their food quickly and efficiently, and motivates them to eat fast for the next round of customers to come in. It is hard to say whether this is a positive or negative change to the restaurant industry, but it is likely that this type of automation will grow and spread to more restaurants in the future. #fordism #mit1500 #mit1500_06 2mon

Normal John Reed
mit1500uwofims Unsafe E. coli outbreaks are often due to the pressure of speeding up the line in slaughter houses. This story is from the national post about last year's major outbreak. "It’s just not enough time,” O’Halloran said. “We are calling on Lakeside to take it seriously.
You can replace all the aluminum, all the stainless steel you want at the plant, but if you don’t give your workers the tools to perform the job properly, we’re not going to solve this problem.” O’Halloran cited other examples of poor hygiene at the plant.
He said cattle are supposed to be washed before they enter to ensure their fur is free of manure. But sometimes the water is not hot enough to get off all the excrement.

He also said excrement from the cattle has backed up on the killing floor at times and forced workers to traipse through the waste and track it through the plant.

O’Halloran said the plant’s increasing reliance on temporary foreign workers is also a problem. The company has not worked with the union to ensure the workers are properly trained and know what their rights are, he added." #fordism #factoryfood #rationalization
