the_chevy88 Fresh Tiger Stripes on Saturn's Enceladus
Image Credit: Cassini Imaging Team, SSI, JPL, ESA, NASA
Do underground oceans vent through the tiger stripes on Saturn's moon Enceladus? Long features dubbed tiger stripes are known to be spewing ice from the moon's icy interior into space, creating a cloud of fine ice particles over the moon's South Pole and creating Saturn's mysterious E-ring. Evidence for this has come from the robot Cassini spacecraft now orbiting Saturn. Pictured above, a high resolution image of Enceladus is shown from a close flyby. The unusual surface features dubbed tiger stripes are visible in false-color blue. Why Enceladus is active remains a mystery, as the neighboring moon Mimas, approximately the same size, appears quite dead. Most recently, an analysis of slight gravity deviations has given an independent indication of underground oceans. Such research is particularly interesting since such oceans would be candidates to contain life. #NASA #Saturn #astronomy #cassinispacecraft #enceladus #oceans #possiblelife

- Fonte: APOD - Créditos: Cassini Imaging Team, SSI, JPL, ESA, NASA

cognitivity Saturn in Blue and Gold — the above picture of Saturn approximates what a human would see if hovering close to the giant ringed world. The above picture was taken in 2006 March by the robot Cassini spacecraft now orbiting Saturn. Here Saturn's majestic rings appear directly only as a thin vertical line. The rings show their complex structure in the dark shadows they create on the image left. Saturn's fountain moon Enceladus, only about 500 kilometers across, is seen as the bump in the plane of the rings. The northern hemisphere of Saturn can appear partly blue for the same reason that Earth's skies can appear blue -- molecules in the cloudless portions of both planet's atmospheres are better at scattering blue light than red. When looking deep into Saturn's clouds, however, the natural gold hue of Saturn's clouds becomes dominant. It is not known why southern Saturn does not show the same blue hue -- one hypothesis holds that clouds are higher there. It is also not known why Saturn's clouds are colored gold. •   jacornondacob I thought earths shy is actually violet we just see it as blue? 3d
  •   cognitivity I've never heard that before. I always thought it appears blue because the molecules in the atmosphere reflect blue light. @jacornondacob 3d
  •   jacornondacob Yea the atmosphere scatters the sunlight. Purple is the light that is most scatter but our eyes sees blue because it has a lower speed then purple does. 3d
  •   cognitivity Interesting. Thanks for the info. @jacornondacob 3d
  •   astronopete Actually @jacornondacob molecules in the air scatter blue light the most and that's why we see the sky as being blue. It is called rayleigh scattering and is because molecules in the air are smaller than longer wavelengths of light (reds). 3d

cognitivity Spewing Ice Crystals on Saturn's Moon Enceladus — the blue stripes strewn across Enceladus are massive vents that spew ice crystals into space. This is evidence of a large body of liquid water deep below its icy surface, making Enceladus a key player in the search for extraterrestrial life. What's more is that the icy vents have actually created an extra ring around Saturn dubbed the "E-ring." (Image credit: Image Credit: Cassini Imaging Team, SSI, JPL, ESA, @NASA)

dmitrykuo regram @nasa
NASA's Cassini spacecraft and Deep Space Network have uncovered evidence Saturn's moon Enceladus harbors a large underground ocean of liquid water, furthering scientific interest in the moon as a potential home to extraterrestrial microbes.

Researchers theorized the presence of an interior reservoir of water in 2005 when Cassini discovered water vapor and ice spewing from vents near the moon's south pole. The new data provide the first geophysical measurements of the internal structure of Enceladus, consistent with the existence of a hidden ocean inside the moon. Findings from the gravity measurements are in the Friday April 4 edition of the journal Science.

The gravity measurements suggest a large, possibly regional, ocean about 6 miles (10 kilometers) deep, beneath an ice shell about 19 to 25 miles (30 to 40 kilometers) thick. The subsurface ocean evidence supports the inclusion of Enceladus among the most likely places in our solar system to host microbial life. Before Cassini reached Saturn in July 2004, no version of that short list included this icy moon, barely 300 miles (500 kilometers) in diameter.

This illustration depicts Enceladus, which has jets of water vapor and ice gushing from its south pole and the large interior ocean beneath an ice shell.
