Ferrari 458 Challenge: Specially for racing

In addition to the stock Ferrari 458 Italia, now its racing “Challenge” edition is available. It is NOT certified for civilian roads, but instead is ready to compete “as is” at official racing championships.

The 458 Challenge features lighter body, modified transmission, suspension, electronics and other elements intended for racing circuits. It`s expected to be priced at about $300,000 in the US, or 25% higher than stock 458 Italia,

The four main differences between the 458 Challenge and the “civilian” 458 Italia are as follows:

1) the “Challenge” is 300 pounds lighter, with total weight about 2680 pounds. The source of low weight is in the thinner aluminum bodyshell panels and extensive usage of light materials like carbon and windows of made of Lexan polycarbonate (except for the glass windshield). Also the 458 Challenge misses many of its interior parts (including passenger`s seat) and noise insulation, which aren`t needed in race.

Finally, the Challenge cars are painted without undercoating, though one can order a vehicle with normal painting as well.

2) The 570-hp engine provides 570 horsepower and is equipped with lighter carbon intake and other parts. The 7-speed “F1” dual-clutch transmission with paddle shifters has been recalibrated for faster shifting. Also it doesn`t have “Parking mode” and handbrake, which are not needed in racing.
The electronically-controlled E-diff differential found at the stock version also remains, being the first-ever at racing Ferraris.

3) the suspension has been completely modified to provide even more precise and fast steering: solid aluminum bushings, stiffer shocks, springs and new steering elements provide less comfort, but make car`s reactions even faster and even more accurate. Wheel angles are different, too, and ride height is about 1.2 inches lower.

4) Finally, ultra-light 19” wheels are equipped with racing slick tires, and each wheel is attached with single center nut for faster pit-stops.
