wandajbarreto Congratulations to all those celebrating the Night of San Juan! Each June 23, Puerto Ricans go to the beach to celebrate the birthday of San Juan Bautista, in a special way. At midnight, they start walking backwards towards the sea and throw back into the water for seven times in a row. Why June 23?

According to the tradition, that night the water is blessed. Those who follow the ritual will have good luck throughout the year, and will be away from bad influences. For most, it's a great excuse to go camping, dance, drink, tell stories and enjoy the beach with family and friends.

wandajbarreto Chiringas (kites) at El Morro. Kite flying is very popular in Puerto Rico. The perfect spot to watch or fly a kite is at the esplanade in front of El Morro because the area is open, close to the sea, and the breeze is perfect. Every February there is a Chiringa Festival in this area, where you'll see hundred of kites in many shapes and sizes. 2mon

wandajbarreto Puerto Rico was very prone to pirate attacks. Sentries and soldiers had to be on the lookout for the pirates. The capital city, San Juan, was surrounded by castles and ramparts. Around the walls, at equal intervals, there were some booths called garitas, where the soldiers stood at checkpoints, day and night. According to a legend, one night, one of the soldiers had vanished from the most isolated garita and was never seen again. Since then, that garita was called Garita del Diablo–the Devil’s Sentry Box --Dr. Rex 2mon
