vghyvoronsky {Friday's Food for Thought}
Today was spent reflecting on "what I do for a living." I got my degree in social work with an emphasis on mental health. I worked at a psychiatric hospital as a clinical therapist for two years and am transitioning to a similar role at a different hospital. On a regular basis, I evaluate what I believe in and why I'm doing the work that I do. Sometimes I wonder if I made a mistake and pursued the wrong "career," but those thoughts usually emerge when I feel stagnant because I've grown as much as I could have in a particular role (job). I love psychology. I love studying the human brain and human behavior. I especially love interacting with people. I get to do that the most in therapy. Therapy is hard. And it's natural to resist it. Many people don't believe in it and don't see it as a real "science." But I've seen so much change happen with individuals and families within the span of a couple of hours. However, it takes a lot of work in order for any sort of transformation to take place. Sometimes, it takes hours, even days, for a smidgen of an epiphany to occur. And most of the work is done not by me, the therapist, but by the client. I have the privilege of guiding the person through the process and pointing out significant realizations that one might otherwise ignore, as it tends to be most difficult to accurately assess ourselves. Therapy is not about reliving the past or figuring out why one is so "messed up." It's about moving on, re-evaluating the way in which a person may view his/herself, changing poor habits, and holding on to hope because the future will be good. Therapy is very practical, believe it or not.
Sometimes I'll leave a session feeling like the life was sucked out of me, but most of the time, I leave energized. And my hope and goal is that my client leaves feeling empowered because s/he can make tangible changes to positively alter his/her own life. I love what I do

vghyvoronsky It was a bittersweet (but mostly sweet) day. It was my last day at Fairfax Hospital today. I said goodbye to a lot of good people, but am so excited to begin the next season of my career. And, to top it off, my gentleman of a husband congratulated me with these gorgeous lilies. To #newbeginnings! 3w
