toledofreepress Northwest Ohio is on the map with @Instagram! The official app feed shared another local Instagrammer's photo today, after featuring a photo by Northwest Ohio's Eric Ward (@littlecoal) yesterday. This time it's a photo from @benmorales' popular #toledorephotography series. Congratulations Ben! #Repost from @instagram with @repostapp --- Every Sunday we post a weekly roundup on our blog (blog.instagram.com), featuring some of our favorite photos and videos from the week. Congrats to those whose photos and videos are featured this week! @inyourwildeyes @espressoandlove @benmorales @brunonaascimento @vikirure @willianaleixo @machete616

Here's @benmorales' original caption: Area Office on Aging asked me to photograph their headquarters, located in south Toledo on the corner of Arlington and Detroit, and I was happy to oblige. Built in 1930, it was once the nurse's dormitory to the Lucas County Hospital next door (now Lakewoods apartments) and later was renamed Maumee Valley Hospital. Originally the hospital mainly treated the poor and indigent but after its renaming it became a well-known teaching hospital, leading to great medical advancements and many distinguished graduates. I assume that like its counterpart, the former nurse's dormitory underwent a good deal of renovation to accommodate its current residences, but it appears to now be in impeccable condition. May we all age so gracefully. The historic photo I'm holding (courtesy of the University of Toledo) shows the three-story, red brick building shortly after its construction in 1930. I especially love the Model-T in the foreground, perhaps the best indication of this brief moment in time.
This is part of my Toledo Rephotography series, displaying historic images of Toledo photographed again in the present day at the exact same location. Hope you enjoy!

toledofreepress Northwest Ohio Instagrammer Eric Ward (@littlecoal) has a photo featured on Instagram's feed today. Congratulations Eric! #Repost from @instagram with @repostapp --- When Ohio schoolteacher and Instagrammer Eric Ward (@littlecoal) received an old film camera that had belonged to his wife's grandfather, the connection was instantaneous. "I imagined all that he had seen through the same viewfinder and wanted to find a way to continue what he had started,” he says.

Eric continues that story on Instagram with his camera, a Bolsey Model C Twin Lens Reflex from the 1950s with a top-down viewfinder. By taking a photo from above with his phone, Eric discovered he could capture two subjects at once: the camera itself and what the camera "sees" through its lens. Eric started the #viewfindersofthepast hashtag to keep track of the photos he was taking, and over time it took off in the community. "Others have started to add photos from a variety of other film cameras," he says, "which I think is perfect!" For more perspective-bending photos from Eric and vintage camera owners around the world, browse the #viewfindersofthepast hashtag and follow @littlecoal.

toledofreepress Check it out. #Repost from @nowthisnews with @repostapp --- This weekend we’ve got some supermoon action going on. A ‘supermoon’ is when a full moon coincides with the moon’s perigee (the point when the moon is closest to the Earth). toledofreepress The National Rifle and Pistol Matches at Camp Perry in Port Clinton officially kicked off this morning with the First Shot Ceremony. This year's first shot was fired by Olympic shooter Gary Anderson, who won the Navy Cup high power rifle match in 1971 with the first recorded perfect score of 200-15X, a record that still stands (tied by another shooter in 2011). The morning's events also included a dedication ceremony for the renovated and renamed Gary Anderson Civilian Marksmanship Program Competition Center. #campperry #nationalmatches #portclinton #firstshotceremony #garyanderson #CMP #highpower #shootingsports #NRA 6d

toledofreepress More than 2,000 people are at #FifthThirdField for the @mudhens' #WorldCup viewing party, watching the United States take on Belgium on the ballpark's big screen.

Many fans were decked out in red, white and blue, including @uoftoledo students Morgan St. Julian, Carly Gains and Austin Burgess. "We liked the crowd atmosphere," Burgess said. "The energy is positive and it's great to celebrate a great sport with others who appreciate it," St. Julian added.

toledofreepress Have you checked out the new mural at @blackkitecoffee on Collingwood Avenue? Called "Collingwood Canopy," the painting is a tribute to the Old West End neighborhood, including the Honey Locust trees cut down by the city and late activist Robert Brundage. Organized by Art Corner Toledo and painted by local artist Mr. Taylor, the mural will be officially dedicated at a celebration 3-5 p.m. July 6. toledofreepress Some #Waterville history from local Instagrammer @benmorales' #toledorephotography project. A #repost from @repostapp. ---
The #ColumbianHouse, located in Waterville along the Maumee River banks, is by far the oldest building I've showcased so far. It was built in 1828 by John Pray, a War of 1812 veteran from Rhode Island who settled in the region ten years earlier. The three-story Federal style building became a popular stopping place for travelers in the early days of Erie and Miami canals. It also became the social and commercial center of the growing village, featuring a large ballroom on the third floor, the town jail on the second, and also the location of the town's post office. Henry Ford even hosted a Halloween party here in 1927.
Over the years, the Columbian House has had many owners and quite a colorful history of death and paranormal activity. During a period of abandonment in the early 1900's, town residents wanted the building destroyed because of the evil presence it housed. I'm sure countless tales could be told of ghosts and strange occurrences. As early as the 1840's, a traveling sheepherder was abducted and murdered during a night's stay at the inn. In the 1880's, a 28 year old woman that murdered her stepbrother in an attempt to murder her stepfather, was locked in one of the rooms as punishment where she supposedly was driven mad. Other ghosts that still reportedly linger here include that of the town drunk that died inexplicably while in the jail and also that of a traveller who dropped dead of cholera minutes after entering the tavern.
To my knowledge, the Columbian House is still in operation, occasionally serving home-cooked meals and hosting events. The building's exterior appears to be in excellent shape and I assume the interior is also well-kept after many rounds of renovations. After almost 200 years, it's great to see this historic landmark still going strong, empowered by its significant and unusual history. Have you ever been inside or experienced anything strange here? What other stories have you heard?
