the_ls_calypso View from the other side. This place is covered in sagebrush, which happens to emit my favorite plant smell of all plants. (Though it actually reminds me of the coast, not the desert). 4h

the_ls_calypso In case you hadn't heard, it's a "blood moon" total lunar eclipse in the wee morning hours. It's first of a "tetrad" (which if four eclipses in a row, not three. I don't get the name). When the moon rose over the hills this evening, it was dusty red. I thought that must be what the "blood moon" thing was, but nope. That's the color during the actual eclipse. 2d
  •   thervnomads What time is the eclipse? Totally want to see it! 2d
  •   the_ls_calypso @thervnomads in our general area, it starts a bit before 10am, but the actual total eclipse part is supposed to happen around 12:45. I was thinking it was later, but I originally had the EST time in my head. 2d
  •   wandrly Watching from Zion. Nothing quite yet (other than a big beautiful, if regular looking, full moon). 2d
  •   cj_yossie @kirstyleewardx your red moon. 2d
  •   thervnomads I slept through it! Doh! :) 1d
  •   the_ls_calypso @thervnomads I woke up at about 1:20 when my water pump burped, so got to see it reappearing from the other side. 1d

the_ls_calypso The silence here feels jarring after spending a week right next to the ocean. The temperature drops immediately when the sun goes behind the mountains. 2d
  •   gdripple We were there last week. Amazing camp. And yea pretty chilly when the sun leaves. 2d
  •   malimish_airstream It's really warmed up since 2 weeks ago. We had 30s overnight and even got flurries at the campground one morning. 2d
  •   malimish_airstream I'm excited for you to try all of the great places to eat in Bishop next week! 2d
  •   the_ls_calypso @gdripple yeah, I was surprised by how fast and extreme it was! 2d
  •   the_ls_calypso @malimish_airstream I remembered that, so I checked the forecast before coming. My solar and setup gets me by just fine unless I need a lot of heat. And yeah, I'm looking forward to that too! 2d
  •   the_ls_calypso (Food, I mean) 2d
  •   malimish_airstream I still have 80 bucks worth of beef jerky from Bishop I'm trying not to dip into. 2d
  •   wandrly @malimish_airstream We downed ours in 2 days...now it's all Minotaur nuggets from the gas station. 2d

the_ls_calypso Thanks for the area travel tips, @malimish_airstream; I made the long haul.

Thee weren't my proudest in airstream parking. After spending 15 min backing into 1 site, I discovered it was way too unlevel to ever fix. 2nd spot took even longer to back into, and even with all my blocks, I'm still not level enough to quell my vertigo, but am hopefully level enough to satisfy the refrigerator gods. Also, a GIANT swarm of bees passed overhead. The sound was horrifying. Luckily they kept going.

All that said, the view here is incredible.

the_ls_calypso OK, I didn't actually leave the coast. The campground in Ojai was booked for the weekend, so I'm at the state park where I get to pat $40/n for the privilege of no hookups, no dump station, ports potties, and not even a picnic table. But ocean. So it's cool. 4d
  •   findingmarshall Rather pay $40 a night for that then $40 a night for this KOA in ABQ. Just saying... 4d
  •   andreasduess Beautiful. Still cold up here in Canada but we've got the first trip planned for May. Not the ocean, but a provincial park on Lake Huron. 3d
  •   andreasduess (also $37/night. But power, dump and clean showers) 3d
  •   the_ls_calypso @andreasduess Aside from the lack of salt water smell, those Great Lakes are practically like oceans; have fun! 3d
  •   the_ls_calypso @findingmarshall I'm with you there. 3d
  •   thervnomads Emma wood looks better than Carp. You would have been squished between two large spring breaking families, here! You can dump and fill up at any state park if you stay at one without. ;) 3d
  •   lostinthejourney One of my favorite spots 3d
  •   sethkhughes Yep, we stayed there on the crumbling defunct stretch of hwy 1 too. Overpriced, but we loved it. They use that cash flow to provide one sole amenity - a dumpster. It's a start. 3d

the_ls_calypso Last sunset 20 or so feet from the ocean before I spend my 5-day limit and scramble to get a spot at a new campground on a Saturday. But for now, just enjoying the sounds of the wave. 5d

the_ls_calypso This workweek has been a lot less stressful than any in the past month or two. Could it be because I'm finally catching up on work, or could it just be this…? #corneroffice 7d

the_ls_calypso This is a photo from back in February of 2013, when we were staying at John Pennekamp State Park in FL. Someone had stolen the license plate off Calypso. This morning, here in SoCal, I saw a ranger walking around Calypso looking confused. I went out to help her, and she told me the license plate on my camping receipt didn't match the trailer. I explained that I accidentally put the old license number on there, and that I have a new number since the old plate had been stolen. She updated my info and went on her way. Then she came back about 10 minutes later and asked if I'd stayed here this past January. When I answered "no", she said that someone had registered to camp here with that license plate number! Crazy.  So she now has the number flagged in the system (which I assume means that the next time they register at a state park, they're gonna get nabbed for the stolen plate. Karma.) 1w
  •   gasvejcar We were wondering, if the stolen plates have expired? Ugh! Nice, if they got caught. 1w
  •   the_ls_calypso @gasvejcar @sethkhughes The plate expired two months after it was stolen! So they didn't get much of a free ride of out of it. I remember well, because DMV hadn't updated their database in time, and it was a confusing hassle to renew with the new plate #. 1w
  •   jesscurren What an awesome ranger! 1w
  •   mikekey If you're really clever you steal the plates off a car similar to yours and then go run red light cameras all over town. 😛 1w
  •   findingmarshall You securing the new plate with some of that fancy anti-theft (which really just keeps lazy thieves away) hardware? 1w
  •   repairstream No way! I never would have thought about people stealing plates. Thanks for the post. 1w
  •   wandrly Whoa now that is some ranger CSI. 1w
  •   onesmalltoaster Bizarro. I hope one of these days you pull into a campground next to your old plate 😈 1w

the_ls_calypso 'night. 1w
  •   mightyheartmom Lovely. Heading north in a few weeks. I would like to stop there on the way. How far in advance do you have to book? 1w
  •   the_ls_calypso @mightyheartmom It's first come, first serve (as is the hookups cg, Feria Beach, right next door). My rev would be to arrive on a Sun or Mon early afternoon as folks are leaving. Though, there are probably always a few spots open, as long as it's not spring break or summer break yet. 1w
  •   the_ls_calypso @mightyheartmom also, these photos don't show how these sites are actually just parallel parking on the side of a highway, so you're right next to traffic (and a train). But the ocean still pretty much drowns out the street noise. 1w
  •   boyink Are you 'walking the nose'? 1w
  •   mightyheartmom Thank you for the info @the_ls_calypso . In that case I will have to make a stop on my way back. I'm traveling north to have repairs made on my motorhome by a specialist and need to be there first thing Monday morning. :) 1w
  •   sethkhughes @the_ls_calypso I'm rolling into the Bay Area next week. Can u recommend a fave camp spot? Or better yet free boondocking if it exists? 1w
  •   the_ls_calypso @sethkhughes — free boondocking in the Bay Area! Hah! (unless you have a courtesy parking hookup). Real estate is prime over there. For no hookups, I'd recommend Samuel P Taylor State Park in Marin. If you do decide on hookups, Olema Ranch Campground in Pt. Reyes/Olema is the best comprimise between atmosphere and ammentities, and you're right there next to Pt. Reyes National Seashore. If you want a short drive or walk to the ferry to SF, Marin Park is your best bet. Total parking lot, but clean and right next to a Trader Joe's. If you like to chance it or stealth it: I always see RVs lined up along the 580/80 frontage road in Emeryville next to the Chevy's (on the Bay, amazing view of SF from there). I have no idea if people get away with parking overnight there though. Another chancy spot: Sir Francis Drake in Larkspur in front of the Marin Country Mart (near the ferry). It's another spot where RVs are parked a lot, but I don't know if they get away with overnights. 1w
  •   sethkhughes @the_ls_calypso Thanks for the info! Yeah, a lot of options to consider. It'll be interesting for sure. 1w

the_ls_calypso Left Pismo today (after meeting the fab @aluminarium) to head down to Rincon Parkway. They just switched their high season Max stay from 7 days to 5, which was a surprise and a bummer. But at least Monday is my Sunday, so I'm making the most our of today! 1w
  •   aluminarium Looking good!!  1w
  •   jesscurren That looks solo fabulous. Point Mugu was also great, but I'm sad we skipped over this. Next time... 1w
  •   findingmarshall Kinda hard to beat that location. 5 days. 7 days. Whatever! 1w
  •   thervnomads Welcome to spring break! We're up the street in Carpinteria if you want to hang while you're in the area. :) 1w
  •   the_ls_calypso @findingmarshall yeah, I'll take 5 days! 1w
  •   the_ls_calypso @thervnomads I can do eves; let me know…also, how filled up is it right now? Trying to figure out if I can get a spot nearby on a Sat. (Since I can only stay here 5 days), or if I should move on… 1w
  •   thervnomads @the_ls_calypso sorry I didn't get back to you sooner! You can check reserve America about Saturday. It's been insane all week with spring breakers, but there have been spots open every morning, though Weekends are busier. We have to be here during the evenings to sell firewood (boo!). If you want to come to Carp and check it out, we could do happy hour/dinner at our place! 6d

the_ls_calypso Back out on the roadside in front of Pismo State Beach North Campground while I bridge the gap between park church-out and check-in times. I've stopped at this place so many times now, it's starting to feel like a second home. 2w
