stmng The Victorian styled Old Mental Hospital, built 1892. One of the oldest buildings in Hong Kong. It was used as European nursing staff quarters until WWII. After the War it was turned into a mental hospital until 1961. Then it became a daytime psychiatric outpatient treatment centre until 1971. It was abandoned for some years. Part of it was then demolished and reconstructed in the 1990s and the complex was reopened in 2001. It is now a community services centre. Located at the High Street on the Island, it has gained a name of ghost house and has been associated with some ghostly tales. 1y

stmng AUTISM stands for “Always Unique Totally Intelligent Sometimes Mysterious”

Some say autism is an illness or disease that requires cure and fix. I would say autism is a category still not fully understood by human beings. So we need to be mindful of the needs of the people having autism but yet have to stay hopeful and open-minded. Have trust in their ability!

Some say it is a disability. I would say "autistic" people are differently able and talented. So we have to make efforts to maximize possibilities. Have faith in fraternity!

Some say autism is contemporary and even epidemic. I would say it may have been present through-out history. Brother Juniper, one of St. Francis of Assisi’s disciples, is well-known for his simplicity and generosity. Depictions about Juniper have prompted researchers to suggest that he might also be autistic. Two oft-quoted stories from the Little Flowers of St. Francis (1390) may have given some hints: the famous pig’s foot story (taking literal meaning) and the see-saw story (stereotypical behaviour in response to sudden, unexpected and frightening event). Paul Collins ' Not Even Wrong: Adventures in Autism has more stories to tell.

Perhaps autism is still a mystery. Or maybe we all share some autistic traits. Lorna Wing, a pioneer psychiatrist in autism research who introduced the term Asperger Syndrome based on Hans Asperger research and whose daughter, now deceased, was autustic, once said you need some autistic traits for real success in science and the arts!
Would you ever imagine there is no distinction between normal and abnormal, able and disable, mainstream and special? And we just communicate based on needs, care and understanding instead of constructed labels and stigmas? That is surely a better world!
After all, we are all created equal and each given a different gift by God. Life is so unique and precious.

A few remarks on the World Autism Awareness Day (April 2nd)

stmng I think this is quite typical in Hong Kong- people don't really appreciate what is given by the nature. They don't know how to live with it and to turn it into a gift that everyone can enjoy. Instead they create an artificial environment to dominate. Even away from the city area, they would squeeze all livings into tiny compact spaces and stack them into high rise blocks on small pieces of demarcated land. 1y
