shanedorian aerial view of the "Kings Trail" on the west side of the Big Island. King Kalākaua had the trail built in the 1870s (with criminal labor) to get cattle from ranches to a place where they could be loaded onto ships. Most of the trail is over rough lava and connects various important historical sites. The trail, along with the much older "Kealanuipuni trail" which extends around the island, was also used by the king's tax collectors during the Makahiki- a four month annual festival. The trails were also used by warriors to prove how fast they could run distance.
This is the 2nd in a series of posts I want to do focusing on historic landmarks and sites here on the Big Island. I learned a lot of this stuff in school but forgot most of the important details. I'm fascinated by the rich history of the Big Island- where I was born and raised. My plan is to shoot the photos in the series from above with a drone, and hopefully learn something along the way. No apologies to those who are not interested. #hawaiianhistory #bigisland #kalakaua @firn_collective @swisssteak @spinybang @kaleo_kai

We met honu today and are so incredibly humbled by this place of raw beauty @shanedorian . Love that the Hawaiians here on the Big Island respect this land we are lucky to inhabit. Look forward to your posts about it's history.... 3w

shanedorian Kaloko fishpond was built over 300 years ago by early Hawaiians here in Kona. The Kuapā (seawall) is 250 yards long and 30-40 feet wide, a giant puzzle of interlocking dry-stacked rocks. The seawall blocks the surf but is built so that fresh water is constantly flowing into the fishpond, It's 5 times larger than the average Kuapā in Hawaii, and a gate allowed for further water exchange and kept the larger fish from escaping. Pretty amazing engineering for it's time. The original Kuapā stood for hundreds of years and it wasn't until cement was added to reduce maintenance costs that the wall was destroyed by large surf in the 1950s.

A'ohe hana nui ke alu 'ia - No task is too big when done together by all #kuapā #hawaiianhistory #kona #gopro #dronesetc
