saverome The big reveal.
Scaffolding is coming down over the next few days on the first cleaned area of the Colosseum project funded by Tod's.
Something to celebrate!
We'll get living history in the Huffington Post (filmed on the last day of work before the dismantling) online shortly.

saverome Behold.
The Roman Forum.
A window into history, facing the Augustan and Caesarian rostra walls, Arch of Septimius Severus and a piece of the Temple of Saturn colonnade.
In the back, the Basilica Iulia.
Any complaints? Just the grass- doesn't belong on the historic travertine pavement.
And look at those clouds: rain tomorrow!

saverome Some like it hot.
I could stand here all day-- interviewed by ANSA yesterday afternoon, at this Campidoglio overlook. In the past few weeks - at the same spot for a channel 5 show with Larry Lamb on Rome's Republic -- and then H2's Ancient Impossible airing now.

saverome Ponte Lupo, aqueduct bridge of the Aqua Marcia, 144BC, Rome's longest aqueduct (91km long).
Here you see many phases of restoration (Augustan, Flavian, Severan) of the bridge near Tivoli. Its impressive remains (over 30 m high for a 100m stretch) are in need of study and major conservation/ restoration.
It was a pleasure to meet up with the association (Ponte Lupo on FB) that is spearheading this initiative and talk about related #historicpreservation issues. The photo only shows a small 12m high section.

saverome Restoration: arch of Constantine.
After 9+ months, the scaffolding came down this week.
Great to see this late antique monument resplendent once more. Some scholars have attributed the lower half to a pre-existing Hadrianic arch, and the upper half to Constantine. The most famous features are the reused panels, such as the attic series attributed to a pre-existing arch of Marcus Aurelius.

saverome Tippy-top.
Exhilarating to stand on the absolute top height of the 50 meter high Colosseum during the massive restoration project, funded by Tod's.
Filmmaker Martin Wetherill and I are creating a new video about the important project for Huffington Post: Living History to take you with us to view the Colosseum like never before. Stay tuned!

The paved road that leads up to the Capitoline hill from the Forum passes the Temple of Saturn and Temple of Vespasian.
Imagine all of the triumphators like Caesar and Marcus Aurelius ascending in their chariots.

Ok, how boring we are in the USA, exporting democracy, arms, McDonald's. Starbucks, Nike, Facebook.
The Romans?? Think aqueducts, baths, and amphitheaters! Here, the arena from Nimes!

saverome What should we do to preserve cultural heritage?
Reconstuct it? (Here Library of Celsus in Ephesus, Turkey). Invest in it?
Do nothing?
Re-bury it?
Stop excavating/ exploring it?
Crowd-fund?
Find sponsors?
Involve local communities?
Engage visitors and locals to live history?

saverome Mausoleum of Augustus.
On August 19 it will be 2000 years since the death of Augustus.
But only this spring the city of Rome began moving forward the stalled restoration project for this important structure, once 45 meters high. The mayor is also now actively seeking sponsorship and outside / foreign funding.
Although such efforts are laudable there are other elements and stakeholders that can become involved (and contribute). Without local participation (and benefits) the city will continue to seek outside help- not a true panacea for sustainability.
What are your thoughts?

saverome Historic preservation.
The scaffolding on the Arch of Constantine is coming down. The cleaning of the first portion of the Colosseum nears completion.
So much heritage to preserve; we can't ever take it for granted, even in the Eternal City. We need more innovative, sustainable solutions.

saverome Colosseum neighborhood.
One of the standouts that underlines the complexities in running the Colosseum in antiquity is the Ludus Magnus. It was one of 4 gladiatorial schools and is the only one (partially) excavated. It's been cited recently as one of the abandoned monuments the city wants to revitalize with foreign contributions. Think of the associations and the view!

saverome Roman cityscape.
How do we live with all of this cultural heritage? With indifference, with style? I get goosebumps every time I zip by the southern Campus Martius, with its Theater of Marcellus, Temples of Apollo and Bellona, excavated in the Fascist period.

saverome Good clean fun!
We're working hard and digging in the Parco dei Ravennati next to the Borgo of Ostia Antica, in a key spot of Ostia's suburbium, virtually unexplored. We are talking about an area of 15,000 square meters. We are concentrating on an area of tombs and what appears to be a late antique domus, with opus sectile marble flooring. (Pictured, new digging in the domus underway.)
The goal of the project is to explore and understand these visible though unstudied structures. With newly acquired knowledge of the site and some local proposals in action to finance a proper fencing around and maintenance of this lovely park, we have the opportunity to help create a pleasant green space for locals and tourists alike, recording and explaining the structures' history and inviting exploration in the adjacent medieval town.

saverome Negative impact.
The massive (long-lived though temporary) roof over the Comitium and Lapis Niger in front of the Curia Iulia is finally being dismantled.
Conceived to protect the investigated monuments (previously excavated) the project blatantly blocked for years views of the Curia, and closed access through the arch of Septimius Severus - thereby suspending the circular route around the forum piazza creating pedestrian traffic flow problems and confusion.
Initially the idea was to have some sort of permanent covering and leaving some of the important excavated remains of the Comitium exposed - but after 5+ years of on-off work the site has been filled and the area will to return as it was (modern pavement), allowing access to the arch and a more pleasant stroll around the forum piazza. Here's looking forward to a modern (didactic) pavement, better access to the Lapis Niger, and final publication!
