  • ricmac The last of the many indie bookstores I visited on this trip - and 'twas a goodie! Cathach in Dublin has an impressive collection of rare books, including many first editions of Irish writers like Yeats, Joyce & Wilde. I bought two first editions of Irish MacManus' (Seamus & M.J.), plus a photo/poetry book of Yeats. Perhaps one day they'll stock a first edition of yours truly :)   3mon

  • ricmac Another highlight of my visit to Sligo: clambering up the Bricklieve mountains to see the Carrowkeel Megalithic Tombs. They are well-designed stone huts, dating back to 3000-3300 BC. So they predate the pyramids of ancient Egypt.   3mon

  • ricmac The Old Watchhouse, Sligo. Talk about a house with character! This roofless stone cottage has two porthole windows that look like eyes. Through them you can peer out into the sea and Blackrock Lighthouse.   3mon

  • ricmac The Lake Isle of Innisfree

    by W. B. Yeats

    I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
    And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made:
    Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee;
    And live alone in the bee-loud glade.

    And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
    Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;
    There midnight's all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
    And evening full of the linnet's wings.

    I will arise and go now, for always night and day
    I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
    While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey,
    I hear it in the deep heart's core.

  @johnpaultitlow, @tasselflower, @zeldman, @jjprojects,
  • ricmac Good bookstore in Sligo and well stocked with books by and about local hero Yeats. Very pleased to see that, as Venice bookstores let me down a bit re books about one of their local heroes, Tintoretto. I bought a small collected poems of Yeats (to carry round with me in Sligo) and a nice pictorial bio.   3mon

  • ricmac I arrived in Sligo on a crisp and sunny winter's day. Visited the Yeats Society and over the road I basked in a quite modern statue of him (words from the great poet are inscribed all over the statue).   3mon

  • ricmac Also today in Dublin, I continued my world tour of indie bookstores. Dublin has some beauties, including this one: Books Upstairs, a small but judiciously stocked bookstore. And that ends the kiwi Mr Bloom's adventures in Dublin for this day...   3mon

  • ricmac A moment of reflection at the Dublin Writers Museum... I very much enjoyed this history of Irish literature. Excellent chronological background info, together with first edition books & memorabilia from the likes of Swift, Yeats & Joyce.   3mon

  • ricmac The Chester Beatty Library in Dublin has the best collection of old books I've ever seen. The guy was a devoted collector of ancient and fine books, whose motto was "quality, quality, quality." I loved it! Bonuses: there was a painting gallery too and it had a gorgeous, golden colored late Corot (one of my favorite artists); the tree in the photo, outside the Library, was beautiful as well :)   3mon
