renval Day #20 of #Renvals100HappyDays are the #inukshuk. As a kid, I used to make these at my dad's cottage. I've read that these stone markers were build and used by those native to North America and the Arctic.
I always found them beautiful and mysterious. The ones I built took every bit of strength and determination to complete and were still a fraction of the size the originals. This small one in the picture is one I made as a little gift for @heyterr 10 years ago.

renval Day #19 of #Renvals100HappyDays are #Symbols, #Hieroglyphics, #Symbolism. While learning about the evolution of modern religion, I was drawn to the #esoteric side. This is where secrets are hidden in plain sight, but only those with prior knowledge are able to recognize the message. When I began studying religious art, I learned just how much detail and thought was put into it. These masterpieces were meant to convey religious and moral lessons though simple pictures, and were necessary for the largely illiterate following. However, they could also provide instruction of a more sinister nature, assuming the recipient has the necessary prior knowledge.
This picture is of a wonderful little (250 year old) book which explains many of the most common symbols of the day. This seems to be an art that has evolved so much it is now hardly recognizable, although the spirit remains. Next time you see something that makes you question where it came from, why it's there or what purpose it has, question a little further and see where you end up.

renval Day #18 of #Renvals100HappyDays is #Time. It's not money or possessions or status or titles that matter at the end of the day... It's time that is the greatest gift we receive.
Here's my favorite passage from the New Testament that sums up time and life pretty well:
#Ecclesiastes 12

Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;

While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain:

In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened,

And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low;

Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:

Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.

Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

renval Day #17 of #Renvals100HappyDays is this amazing little piece of technology, #RaspberryPi. I was exposed to this through my research on #XBMC. Eventually, I bought one and set it up with #RaspBMC, configured with #XBMCHub and a slew of other things... #FreeTV is a pretty sweet thing. #100HappyDays.
Oh, I also have a side project where I sell these bad boys to good people like you... Check it out at @RaspberryZaibatsu

renval Day #16 of #Renvals100HappyDays is #MartialArts. I think it was #RickyTheDragonSteamboat who sparked my fascination the martial arts. There was something so mystical and esoteric about about it. I studied various martial arts over the years focussing primarily on the #KoreanMartialArts of #InternationalTaeKwonDo, #TangSoDo, #HapKiDo and #HwaRangDo, but I was also fortunate enough to dabble in various other styles such as #KungFu (including #QiGong, #TaiChi and #DimMak) and #JiuJitsu. The philosophies I learned along the way probably shaped who I am today more than anything else I've ever been exposed to, including religion. This picture is of my mini or speed #nunchucks. This weapon is of #Okinawan origin and was originally used either as a #RiceFlail or a #HorseBit. Many classic #Japanese weapons evolved from farming tools, including #Tonfa, #Sai, #Kama and the #BoStaff). #ITF #TaeKwonDo #GeneralChoiHongHi #GeneralChoi #MakeOnePunchWorthAThousand 3mon

renval Day #14 of #Renvals100HappyDays is #Cryptography or the art of writing in a #Cipher so as to conceal a message from all but those with the key to reveal it (or those with the ability to crack it.) I began this study while reading about military antiquity and methods of communication before modern technology.
There are many ciphers that can be mastered in hours, for example, #SubstitutionCipher, #PigpenCipher, #TranspositionCipher and #CaesarCipher are just a few. I found this study to be increasingly addictive and engaging. I enjoyed the secretive element of it and the learning, but, above all, it was a challenge like a puzzle that kept me up a night.
There are many ciphers out in the world today that professional and amateur cryptanalysts have been unable to crack. The ones I've been most fascinated with are #VoynichManuscript, #Kryptos and the ceiling of #RosslynChapel. Check them out! They're really interesting.
The image above is of a #PewterTankard that I engraved with a cipher of my own creation. It has a message... Something very profound and meaningful to me, and I welcome anyone to try and decipher it. I feel that only a certain type of person would want or be able to decipher it and it is only THAT type of person who would truly appreciate the message hidden within. #100HappyDays #Code #Secret #HiddenMessage

renval Day #13 of #Renvals100HappyDays is the #Egyptian #Obelisk. There are at least 19 ancient obelisks outside of Egypt today. I have been fortunate enough to personally visit 15 (#Rome #VaticanCity #London #NewYork #Florence #Paris). I became fascinated with these #Spires while learning about #PaganSunWorship and questioning why these Pagan relics have been replicated and now existed all over the world (#WashingtonMonument for example.) One theory is that, immediately before the #Sun rises, or immediately after it sets, a streak of brilliant golden sunshine shoots up from the place in the horizon where the sun is just out if sight. Pagan Sun Worshipers would naturally be drawn to this holy moment and commemorate it. The Obelisk is the solidification on this phenomenon. In fact, it was believed that #Ra lived in the tip, which was often covered in shining metal or gold in order to catch the first rays before the dawn.
Researching the obelisk, I learned many of their individual stories of how they were taken from Heliopolis (one of the cities of ancient Egypt and translated to "City of the Sun") brought back to a different land, re-erected, toppled in battle, covered in debris, lost for many years, found, moved and then re-erected again. I've read that, in war, conquering armies would steal the idols of their enemies and bring them back to their land, in order to win favor from the Gods. Seems like a very primitive act, and yet, the Washington Monument, although not an "ancient obelisk, stands and seems blasphemously out of place.

  •   renval All that aside, what truly dumbfounded was the fact that these pieces of granite can weigh up to 450 tons and be almost 4,000 years old... They have been outside, exposed to the elements forever!!! They have seen empires rise and fall and they still stand. They are truly mysterious and amazing.
    Final thought... The oldest and most priceless artifact of #TheMetropolitanMuseumOfArt in #NewYork is #CleopatrasNeedle, (who's sister obelisk stands at the #VictoriaEmbankment in the #CityOfWestminster, #London) an obelisk from the time of #PharaohThutmoseIII (1479 - 1425 BCE). It sits outside, completely exposed to the weather, in #CentralPark, waiting for this empire to fall and the next to rise up from its ashes. #100HappyDays 3mon
