rena_tom Do you agree with this view of studio craft? That it's as much about self-expression as the object produced? How does that stack up to art, or design, and self-fulfillment? (This book is "Why we make things as why it matters") 3d
  •   parabolicmuse I feel its one of our needs to understand our appetites for creation and destruction. Not sure whether the conclusion that self-expression is universally applicable. Sometimes something is functional. Sometimes we want to Order Chaos, which is not strictly the need for self expression. 3d
  •   parabolicmuse What I meant is that I think applying any one reason to the practice of craft is facile. 3d
  •   etrine Totally agree with what he says. I think the expression is revealed through the production of the object. That is, the object nor the expression are ends in and of themselves. I've always said - Art is about the artist, design is about the audience, craft is about the object. 3d
  •   langealexandra There are so many other things with the goal of "creative, self-expressive work" it seems odd to claim that as special territory. 3d
  •   thismachine314 Though I think those things (self-expression & object produced) are not mutually exclusive, I agree with @parabolicmuse .... The motivations listed are oversimplified. But sometimes that's necessary to begin to understand the tip of the "artist" iceberg. I feel that there are many beautiful things created solely out of function, seeking nothing from within, and giving without an expectation of receipt. 3d
  •   rena_tom i think what the maker gains is sometimes self-knowledge, but sometimes intense material knowledge, or procedural knowledge, or even business knowledge. the author is talking about craft, and studio craft specifically, though. i don't know as much about the history of this as i'd like. 2d

rena_tom Ok, I must really be procrastinating. I was going to cut my hair this month but it's the longest it's been since I was 21 and I'm vaguely curious to see what happens. On the flipside, spring/summer winds in SF mean I'm basically pulling hair out of my mouth every 5 minutes. Stay or go? 4d
