oh_look_a_sparkly_thing The look of defeat matches mine when our chickens are attacked. 20h
  •   boodleoo Naughty raccoon!!! 20h
  •   sarina.bowen What are you going to do with him? 19h
  •   mama_logic Now take a look at her reach. Through the bars, as far as she can reach, the grass is pulled up. We love raccoons, we rehab them. We also have chickens. This is a lesson for all chickenkeepers- if you use wide space mesh such as chicken wire- a raccoon can grab as far as their reach extends, and a 30 lb raccoon can extend it's arm pretty far. They'll pull your chickens to the fence and eat them right through the bars. We have hardware cloth 3' from beneath ground up. 18h

oh_look_a_sparkly_thing Record number of blooms on the Red Hot Poker this year- 3. It's not reliable being in a coldish for the plant area, but I like it enough to let it use up real estate. Last year it got moved it & thought I killed it. Maybe the new spot was the magic solution. 2d
  •   robobear71 I planted those this year. The squirrels loved them. Alas 2d

oh_look_a_sparkly_thing How I hope to stay better covered when sleeping with a blanket thief. When all else fails, go up a size. thank you @kohls. The associate who checked out purchase was by far most awesome retail person I've encountered in a long time! 2d

oh_look_a_sparkly_thing Betsy-Ross & Arthur are doing well! Arthur has some leg feathering like their papa did. Arthur also has a few random zebra stripes & wings have some black, too. It will be interesting to see how these two feather out. 2d

oh_look_a_sparkly_thing Orchid transplant today- the flower spike on Aloha Sparks Halloween dried up. It was so terribly root bound- I slowly teased out FOUR cups of the moss it was planted in- a 3.25" pot!!!! I know growers do those grows for easier transport. She's now in a bigger pot, roots free & loose. Now air & moisture can reach them & hopefully she wasn't too terribly shocked. I do need to get clear orchid pots, but I didn't want to make her wait. 4d
  •   oh_look_a_sparkly_thing Maybe 6 cups. Regardless, that's a shitton on compacted growing matter for all those roots & pot size. 4d

oh_look_a_sparkly_thing Arthur hatched 2 hours ago (13:15) today. Since it pipped out the day the hurricane fell, it shall be named. If it's a hen, oh well. (Or maybe Guinevere would be appropriate? ) 5d

oh_look_a_sparkly_thing Meet Betsy/Ross hatched on the Fourth of July. We set up a temporary brooder in the garage- away from housecats & outside wildlife. It's not ideal, but best possible situation at this time. The no6 egg is making progress on unzipping itself. 5d

oh_look_a_sparkly_thing The no2 egg has hatched. Since I don't know what to do for a brooder right yet, I've put it in a plastic tub with shavings in the incubator. That way it's contained & in a cozy spot to rest & dry off, rather than the mesh floor, possibly disturbing the other eggs. I wish we still had DD's old hamster cage or a birdcage. 6d
  •   oh_look_a_sparkly_thing Since this hatched on Independence Day, I'm thinking the name Betsy Ross is appropriate. If it's a hen, Betsy, if it's a rooster, Ross. 6d

oh_look_a_sparkly_thing Eggs 2 & 6 from abandoned nest are pipping. The no2 is properly unzipping, unlike the egg did yesterday (no4). No6 is just beginning, but no need to rush. They use this time to rest, allow the extra yolk to be absorbed & to practice breathing. Being born/hatched is work! In light of the coop disaster outside, I don't want to get excited, but remain hopeful these guys might have a chance. 6d

oh_look_a_sparkly_thing Ingredients for the chicken coop interloper special sandwich that went into trap. I just saw small raccoon in back yard when I turned on porch light to see how hard it was raining. Not sure if it's the critter that's slowly wiping out our coop. 6d
  •   oh_look_a_sparkly_thing Lucky bastard is I think too big for the trap- got said sandwich out & somehow got bottom latch undone & got my sweet Frida. She was originally named Freedom by the little girl who previously owned her. It seems weird that a chicken named Freedom was killed on Independence Day. I am so weary of this creature & what it's doing. DH & I are stumped & I hate that wildlife is smarter than we are. 6d
  •   leannansi Oh no! Lots of big {{{{hugs}}}} I loved your photos of Frida. :-( 6d

oh_look_a_sparkly_thing Box from @ModCloth was partially unsealed/open at delivery. Fortunately item was safe under packing rolls. Box for item was really big & perhaps top pulled away from tape because it's so large. Not unhappy, but want them to know. Content was Everywhere Bag that DD ordered 1w
