natgeo Photo by @argonautphoto (Aaron Huey) of a #Sherpa climber carrying loads through the #Khumbu icefall above Everest Base Camp. My heart aches today for the families of the Sherpa climbers who died on Everest yesterday. It was the deadliest day in Everest history. These are the men who make it possible for all commercial expeditions to take their clients to the summit of these peaks. "Sherpas bear the real burden of climbing Mt Everest, they're the ones who take the biggest risks." -@conradclimber More updates online this weekend at nationalgeographic.com 3h

natgeo Photo by @peteressick. My photography book, The Ansel Adams Wilderness, has just been released by National Geographic Books. The book is a collection of photographs from an amazing wilderness area in the Sierra Nevada Mountains next to Yosemite National Park. This High Sierra region was where Ansel Adams first developed his love of nature and mastered the art and craft of landscape photography. My photographs are reproduced in tritone and I think they look wonderful. There is also a lot of information included about the region and Ansel Adams and a photographer's notes section in the rear with technical information. For me this book started with an idea four years ago, and required me to step out of my comfort zone many times along the way to see the project to completion. So it is awesome to to hold the book in my hands and realize that dreams do sometimes come true. Thanks also to The Wilderness Society for their support of the book. 9h

natgeo Photo by @amivitale. Many of us have ceased to think of the #panda as a “wild” creature. It’s more of a cartoon animal that lives in zoos. But watching Zhang Xiang, the first female panda to be released into the wild, you realize that she may be the most famous panda that no one—save a handful of scientists-- will ever see.

natgeo photo by @andy_bardon - Well, it's climbing season on Mt. Everest, where each day seems to be a balancing act. Team logistics, acclimatization, physical hardship, and objective danger are all part of the deal. Wishing all a safe season, & massive thanks to the Sherpa that make it all possible. natgeo Photo by @argonautphoto (Aaron Huey). Once upon a time I walked across America. Every step for 3,349 miles. The journey took 154 days. This is a photo I took on day 132, mile 2,715 on a farm near Somerset, Ohio. I stayed with this family for 3 days and let my feet rest. I made paintings with the 3 children of the house, and ate my sandwiches sitting cross-legged on the floor in the room where they were homeschooled. That walk shaped the way I see the world. #walkacrossamerica 1d

natgeo Photo by @joeriis Rarest bear in the world, the Gobi grizzly bear. Only 22-30 individuals remain, photographed #onassignment for @natgeo magazine in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia. This is a species living on the edge of existence. A desert dwelling vegetarian bear that needs us to care. The camera I used to make this picture was destroyed by the bear a second after this picture was made, luckily the memory card made it. natgeo Photo by @amivitale. China’s Giant Panda Research Center’s releases a captive born panda named Zhang Xiang (Thinking of Hope") into Liziping Nature Reserve. She had been training at the Wolong Hetaoping Base for 26 months. During Zhang Xiang’s wildlife training, staff at the research base made sure that the cub stayed with mother panda so that she learned how to survive in the wild.

natgeo Photo @ladzinski - Sunrise view from #DeadHorsePoint State Park near Moab, Utah. This scenic vista was historically used as a natural corral for live stock due to the shear cliffs on all sides of the peninsula in the sky with a limited exit. As legend has it, a group of cowboys corralled a heard of wild horses here in the 19th century and failed to return to collect the animals leaving them to die of thirst within view of the Colorado river some 2,000 feet below. A harsh story in a strikingly beautiful landscape of the American west. @3stringsproductions @natgeocreative 2d

natgeo Photo @pedromcbride (Pete McBride). A climber is dwarfed by towers of frozen debris on Everest's Khumbu Ice Fall, one of the most dangerous regions on the mountain's south side. Every spring climbing season, a small team of #Sherpa build the route through this perilous zone that stretches between 18,000 and 20,000 feet. While most climbers try to limit their exposure in this jungle of crashing glacier, these Sherpa known as the "Ice Doctors" go up and down every other day for 2 months to maintain the route. @thephotosociety @natgeocreative #danger #icedoctors #Everest #climbing #nepal #bravery #nature 2d

  •   wscarcella It's difficult looking at this picture knowing so many Sherpas died in the area where this photo was taken. These men are put at great risk to make the climb safer for others. Is it worth it? Are they paid well? Do you think they love what they're doing? I feel so sorry for the families of the dead Sherpas. I can't stop thinking of their sadness. 30min
