  • natgeo photo by @christianziegler on assignment for @natgeo in Queensland, Australia.

Egg of a southern cassowary, a flightless bird growing up to 1.8 meters (6 feet) tall, with a weight of up to 70 kg. Cassowary females lay clutches of 3 to 8 eggs, each of which weighs a pound (see chicken egg for size comparison), which are then incubated by the male alone, for 55 to 60 days.

The southern cassowaries is an endangered species, with only around 1500 individuals left in the wild in Australia, due to habitat loss and fragmentation, road kill, and feral dogs and pigs. Cassowaries are called the 'gardeners of the rainforest', because several dozen tree species depend on this magnificent bird to have their seeds dispersed. A glimpse of an upcoming story about cassowaries in National Geographic Magazine.

  • natgeo Photo: @randyolson (Randy Olson) - There was an article this week published in the New York Times about robots assisting the elderly. This reminded me of the images I took while working on the @natgeo "7 Billion Project." This particular robot is being programmed to help elderly out of bed and into a wheelchair, to pick up a straw and put it into a drink for them, and eventually help around the kitchen and shopping. @natgeo @thephotosociety #robots #7billion #latergram   1d
  • ceilidhthedestroyer Focus on dishwashing and laundry cleaning robots first.   5h
  • danneeeboi The elderly lose their independence, let them have the option in deciding whether they want a robot to help them. If they don't require another person to help them 24/7 then they won't feel like they are being a burden. Everytime I'm helping the elderly get out of bed or attending their activities of daily living I frequently hear them say " I feel like such a burden" or "I didn't want to harass you" "you looked busy " I think this is a great option. I'm not saying it would work for everyone but why deny someone of something they might love.   5h

  • utcpeacemovement That creeps me out. I doubt the elderly want to spend their last years under the care of a Robot @natgeo   3h
