  • marscuriosity The Mars Hand Lens Imager #MAHLI makes a closeup inspection of #Curiosity's wheel assembly. Note some of the rock-induced dents on the internal side of the rim. This image was taken by MAHLI on Sol 275 (2013-05-15 15:29:26 UTC)   18h
  • nvspeedfactory You shoulda put some chrome 22's on her, NASA. Try pimpin your ride a little better next time   18h
  • tripledair I love this shot.   18h
  • el_poeta_no Can you explain the dents on the inside of the rim? From rocks, OK, but how does that happen on the inside?   17h
  • shootingstarsmaui Knowing that there's years of study behind it but what determined the final tread pattern for a terrain you were unsure of?   17h

  • marscuriosity NASA/JPL has suspended transmissions from/to #Curiosity until May 1 due to Mars passing behind the sun, from Earth's perspective. The Sun disrupts transmissions between the planets during this 'Mars Solar Conjunction' which occurs about once every 26 months. The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter #MRO will still collect data from Curiosity, but store it (~1.5 Gigabytes worth) until 1-May-2013 when it will finally be transmitted back to Earth. Curiosity continues its scientific experiments via stored instructions and autonomous functions.   1mon

  • marscuriosity The imaged white substance- calcium sulfate, indicates that the soil of Gale Crater is pH neutral or mildly alkaline. "The range of chemical ingredients we have identified in the sample is impressive, and it suggests pairings such as sulfates and sulfides that indicate a possible chemical energy source for micro-organisms" said Paul Mahaffy, Principal Investigator of the Sample Analysis at Mars #SAM series of instruments. This image was taken by the Mars Hand Lens Imager #MAHLI on Sol 231 (2013-03-31 12:41:03 UTC)   2mon

  • marscuriosity Curiosity is back to delivering freshly drilled rock dust to its Sample Analysis at Mars #SAM tool, recording weather variables with its Rover Environmental Monitoring Station #REMS and taking Gale Crater radiation readings with its Radiation Assessment Detector #RAD. This image is an overview of #Curiosity's robotic arm and a few of its tools; left-top is the wire brush, top is the rock drill and in the lower-right, the Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer's Head Assembly #APXS. • marscuriosity Having successfully emerged from 'Safe-Mode', Curiosity makes its first free-space move of its arm since swapping to CPU 'B'. Notice the incline of 18,000ft/5.5km high Mount Sharp (Aeolis Mons) in the left-background. Currently, preparations are being made to #Curiosity for the impending month long (April) interruption of signal due to Mars passing behind the Sun from Earth's perspective. This image was taken by the Left-side 'B' #NavCam on Sol 222 (2013-03-22 06:36:16 UTC)   2mon
  • carl_rahn   2mon
  • therealchriscruz @the_mothrokk ditto!!   2mon
  • shootingstarsmaui I missed "why" swapping to CPU B was necessary? Is there a C, D, E ? Or is this the last option if B goes down? [knock wood or moon rock or...]   2mon
  • potoguzzi Welcome back   2mon
  • marscuriosity A faulty memory location was identified on CPU 'A' necessitating the move to CPU 'B'. A workaround is now in place and CPU 'A' is now the new backup to CPU 'B'. There are only two primary CPUs on Curiosity. @shootingstarsmaui   2mon
  • shootingstarsmaui Mahalo [thank you] for the explanation & images. We will continue to watch & learn. Though I am very "techy" I am thrilled tp watch Mars on my phone!!!!!   2mon

  • marscuriosity ITS OFFICIAL- NASA's lead scientist for the Mars Exploration Program states, "A fundamental question for this mission is whether #Mars could have supported a habitable environment ... from what we know now, the answer is YES." #NASA identified sulfur, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and carbon (key chemical ingredients for life) in the gray powder #Curiosity drilled out of a sedimentary rock near an ancient stream bed in Gale Crater (#Aeolis Mons). That powder was delivered to this Solid Sample Inlet sieve of the Sample Analysis at Mars #SAM instrument. This image was taken by the Mars Hand Lens Imager #MAHLI on Sol 195 (2013-02-22 12:26:04 UTC)   2mon

  • marscuriosity While Curiosity is analyzing rock dust with its Sample Analysis at Mars #SAM Tool (results by 13-Mar), this photo of the rocky floor of Gale Crater (Aeolis Mons) was taken. If you look close, you can see #Curiosity's tracks in the soil. This image was taken by the Right-side #MastCam on Sol 198 (2013-02-25 09:24:09 UTC)   2mon

  • marscuriosity Curiosity bored a 2.5in/6.4cm hole into rock 'John Klein' on 8-Feb-2013 collecting its rock-powder in the 'Collection and Handling for In-Situ Martian Rock Analysis' #CHIMRA scoop. It will be sieved and only particles less than 0.006in/150µm across will be fed into #Curiosity's Chemistry & Mineralogy #CheMin and Sample Analysis at Mars #SAM instruments. This image was taken by #MastCam on Sol 193 (2013-02-20).   3mon

  • marscuriosity While #Curiosity's drill is focused upon Martian rock, the Right-side #MastCam took this photo of a nearby rock outcropping on Sol 186 (2013-02-13 06:12:55 UTC)   3mon

  • richardhuk I keep looking for Marvin the Martian hiding behind a rock :-)   3mon
  • patrickbmbm You can see by how smooth the rock edges are that it is on the floor of what used to be a giant ocean. Question is, where did all of the water go?   3mon

  • marscuriosity Fine-grained sedimentary bedrock was used for the first drilling on #Mars. The left drill hole measures about 0.63in/1.6cm wide and 2.5in/6.4cm deep. The dust produced by drilling will be analyzed by the Sample Analysis at Mars #SAM tool in pursuit of evidence of a once wet environment. This image was taken by the Right-side #MastCam on Sol 182 (2013-02-09 03:21:45 UTC)   3mon

  • marscuriosity A wide field of view image from #Curiosity's Front Left-side 'A' Hazard Avoidance Camera #HazCam. The four HazCams on Curiosity capture B&W images 120' wide (horizontal & vertical) at 1024x1024 pixel resolution. HazCams provide a unique point of view that is both low to the ground (where driving hazards are) and encompassing of the surrounding environment.
