healthy_cravings 1. Lack of Sleep Ages Your Skin:
Most people have experienced sallow skin and puffy eyes after a few nights of missed sleep. But it turns out that chronic sleep loss can lead to lackluster skin, fine lines, and dark circles under the eyes. When you don’t get enough sleep, your body releases more of the stress hormone cortisol. In excess amounts, cortisol can break down skin collagen, the protein that keeps skin smooth and elastic.
Sleep loss also causes the body to release too little human growth hormone. When we’re young, human growth hormone promotes growth. As we age, it helps increase muscle mass, thicken skin, and strengthen bones.
_
2. Sleep Loss Dumbs You Down:
Sleep plays a critical role in thinking and learning. Lack of sleep hurts these cognitive processes in many ways.
_
3. Sleep Deprivation Can Lead to Serious Health Problems:
Sleep disorders and chronic sleep loss can put you at risk for:
•Heart disease •Heart attack •Heart failure •Irregular heartbeat •High blood pressure •Stroke •Diabetes
_
4. Lack of Sleep Kills Sex Drive:
Sleep specialists say that sleep-deprived men and women report lower libidos and less interest in sex. Depleted energy, sleepiness, and increased tension may be largely to blame.
_
5. Sleepiness Is Depressing:
Over time, lack of sleep and sleep disorders can contribute to the symptoms of depression.
_
6. Sleepiness causes accidents: Sleep loss is a big public safety hazard every day on the road. Drowsiness can slow reaction time as much as driving drunk. Also, studies show that sleep loss and poor-quality sleep also lead to accidents and injuries on the job.
_
7. Sleepiness Makes You Forgetful:
Trying to keep your memory sharp? Try getting plenty of sleep.
_
8. Losing Sleep Can Make You Gain Weight:
When it comes to body weight, it may be that if you snooze, you lose. Lack of sleep seems to be related to an increase in hunger and appetite, and possibly to obesity.
_
9. Lack of Sleep May Increase Risk of Death: In the “Whitehall II Study,” British researchers looked at how sleep patterns affected the mortality of more than 10,000 British civil servants over two decades.

healthy_cravings Source: OneGreenPlanet.org - INGREDIENTS:
Lentil Meatball Sandwich • BBQ Sauce:
1 cup ketchup
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon molasses
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
2 teaspoons dry mustard
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 – 2 teaspoon vegan smoke sauce (optional) • Sweet Miso Coleslaw:
3 cups colesaw mix (Dole’s has a great shredded cabbage mixed with slivered carrots that I like)
1/2 cup vegan mayo (Earth Balance)
2 tablespoons vinegar (I actually use sweet pickle juice here…a trick my mom taught me)
2 tablespoons miso paste
2 tablespoons maple syrup
1/8 teaspoon celery seed (optional)
1/3 teaspoon of turmeric
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
2 tablespoons chia seeds
__
- PREPARATION:
1. Use this recipe --> (http://www.onegreenplanet.org/vegan-food/recipe-red-lentil-burgers-with-kale-pesto/) for the Lentil Burgers, but instead of making them into patties, I simply rolled them into 1 – 1.5″ balls.

2. Set these on a tray and place them in the freezer to firm up a bit. Then transfer them to a freezer bag and return them to the freezer for storage.

3. You can (obviously) make these ahead of time, or serve them right from the oven (well, after they’ve cooled, of course!). It’s up to you! • Barbecue Sauce:
Combine ingredients in a small bowl.
Stir until well-combined and then set aside so the flavors can get to know each other a little better. -Sweet Miso Coleslaw

Combine everything but the coleslaw mix in a small bowl. Stir until well-combined. Your sauce might look a little runny. That’s ok. The chia seeds will not only add some great Omega-3s, they’ll also thicken the sauce.
Let that stand for a bit before adding it to your coleslaw mix. You might want to dip your finger in the sauce to see if it has the right mix of flavors for you. If not, you might want to add a little bit of salt or pepper or whatever coasts your coleslaw.
While you’re waiting, add the coleslaw mix to a medium-sized resealable bowl.
Once the sauce has thickened a bit (thank you chia seeds), combine this with the coleslaw mix and stir until all the ingredients are incorporated.
Seal the container and place it in the fridge while you’re putting the rest of your sandwiches together.

healthy_cravings ELDERBERRY SYRUP: Is a proven remedy for preventing and recovering from the fevers, flu, colds, runny noses, excessive mucus, soothes sore throats, aches and pains, supports the immune system and respiratory system. It contains large amounts of antioxidants, potassium, beta carotene, calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin C. It is easy and frugal to make your own supply, and it is incredibly healing to the body. It covers all your bases and is perfectly safe for adults and children.
•Learn how to make your own elderberry syrup and keep it stocked in your fridge for up to 3 months. MountainRoseHerbs.com sells dried elderberries for an excellent price. I use powdered as it is easier to find. •If you’d rather buy your Elderberry syrup, you can buy Nature's Way Organic Sambucus for Kids (they have adult too) or you can buy Quantum Elderberry brand as well and it is excellent alternative. You can purchase on VitaCost.com and you will go through it with one cold bug, so that is why I will make my own because it will be a lot cheaper.
___
Elderberry Echinacea Syrup:
•2/3 Cup Elder Berry Powder (Use 2c. fresh berries, or 1c. whole berries)
•2 TBSP Echinacea Root
•2 TBSP Fresh Ginger Root
•1 Cinnamon Stick
•1/2 tsp Whole Cloves
•3 1/2 C. Filtered Water
•3/4 Cup – 1 1/2 Cup Raw Honey or Blackstrap Molasses or Grade B Maple Syrup (sweetened to your personal preference)
_
1) Place all ingredients EXCEPT honey into a heavy saucepan and SIMMER for 30-45 minutes.
2) Strain the liquid using a mesh strainer or cheesecloth. Because I had used Elderberry Powder, instead of whole berries (Mountain Rose was out of whole berries), I strained the mixture a second time, through a mesh tea strainer.
3) Allow the mixture to cool until it is just warm to the touch. Add honey, and stir until well-mixed.
4) Refrigerate until use. Can last upto 3 months in the refrigerator. For immune boosting, I have read that adults can take up to 1 TBSP of the syrup per day, while children should take 1 TSP (under 1 should take 1/2 tsp.). _
Usage: Adults/Children 1yr. +up - Take 1 Tbsp. daily *For acute illnesses take 1Tbsp. 3x's a day* (London takes 1/2 tsp. daily & will increase when she's 1yr.)

  •   healthy_cravings I would never give London Tylenol nor would I take it myself because it is toxic. When London caught scarlet fever and her temp hit 103F I gave her: B&T (Boericke & Tafel) Colds & Flu Children's Alpha CF Natural Homeopathic Tablets. She woke up the next morning fever free and feeling like a million bucks. Being that I'm not a doctor I cannot tell you to give this to your child. healthy_cravings Digestive Health: Each of us has more than 1,000 different types of bacteria that live in our digestive tracts, helping us to break down food and absorb nutrients. But when we take antibiotics -- medicine that is designed to kill destructive, illness-causing bacteria -- the drugs can also kill the healthy intestinal flora that helps us digest. As a result, doctors commonly prescribe taking probiotics to "repopulate" the digestive tract with healthful bacteria.
But probiotics can also help with other types of digestive issues. It can be helpful for people with irritable bowel syndrome.
Even for those without an urgent problem, probiotics can help with overall digestive management. Good bacteria helps "crowd out" bad bacteria. That's because the intestine is lined with adherence sites where bacteria latches on. If the sites are populated with good-for-you microbes, there's no place for a harmful bacterium to latch on.
__
Recommended are the following unpasteurized probiotic rich foods: •Kefir
•Sauerkraut
•Miso
•Pickles
•Tempeh
•Kimchi
•Kombucha Tea
__
Allergies:
Allergy research is still preliminary, but at least one large, high quality study found a relationship between women taking probiotics during pregnancy and a 30 percent reduction in the instance of childhood eczema (an early sign of allergies) in their infants.
__
Women's Health:
Just like the digestive tract, the vagina relies on a precarious balance of good and bad bacteria. When that balance is off, it can result in one of two very common, though thoroughly uncomfortable infections: bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections. In fact, bacterial vaginosis can actually lead to a yeast infection.
__
Immunity:
Surprisingly, one of the main functions of healthful bacteria is to stimulate immune response.

By eating probiotic-rich foods and maintaining good intestinal flora, a person can also help to maintain a healthy immune system. And that has real world effects: for example, in one small study of students, those who were given a fermented dairy drink (instead of milk) displayed increased production from lymphocytes -- a marker of immune response. **(Important Health Benefits Continued Below...)

healthy_cravings Coconut Oil Baby Massage
___________________________
Many of you have asked what I use to "lotion" (moisturize) London. Well, I thought I would put together a short video to demonstrate how I take care of her skin and hair. At one point in time I used Extra-Virgin Olive Oil however I recently discovered that Olive Oil is not all it cracked up to be as a lot of Olive Oil that is on the market is cut with cheaper oils such as Canola and there are only a few pure and true companies that sell 100% pure Olive Oil. So, I switched it up and started using Organic Extra-Virgin Cold Pressed Coconut Oil.
_________________
• I bathe London and once she is done I DO NOT fully dry her. I leave her skin and hair damp but not soaking wet.
• I then take the coconut oil and gently massage it into her skin and hair in a circular motion (being very careful around her soft spot at the top of her head) and massage her for a few minutes until it is somewhat absorbed into her skin. • I also use this in her private area as coconut oil is known to heal any issues that may arise in the genital area as it is anti-viral/anti-fungal. She's only had 1 diaper rash and that is because she was allergic to a certain brand name of wipes.
This will continue to keep her skin baby soft long after her baby stage is over. This is what my mother did with me as a baby and my skin is baby soft as I have continued to so the same to my skin and hair.
That's it everyone! If you have any questions feel free to ask them below. Don't forget to share this info and Tag A friend!

healthy_cravings And for dessert!...
Source: http://www.edibleperspective.com/home/2013/3/28/almond-joy-smoothie-milkshake.html
________________________ • Almond Joy Milkshake •
gluten-free, vegan // yields 2 milkshakes
•••••••••••••••
•1 can full fat coconut milk
•3/4 – 1 1/4 cups lite canned coconut milk
•6 tablespoons unsweetened shredded/flaked coconut
•1/4 cup creamy almond butter
2 teaspoons unsweetened cocoa powder
•4-6 medjool dates, pitted, or 3-4 tablespoons honey, agave, brown rice syrup
•1 teaspoon vanilla extract
•1/3 cup chopped dark chocolate, vegan if needed
_______________
-Vigorously shake the can or whisk contents in a bowl until the liquid and solid are combined, then pour into an ice cube tray and freeze until solid.
-Once frozen, place the ice cubes, 3/4 cup lite coconut milk, coconut, almond butter, cocoa powder, dates, and vanilla in a high powered blender. Reserve the chocolate until the end.
-Blend and stir/scrape the sides until fully smooth. Add more milk as needed to thin out.
-Add the chopped chocolate and pulse until chocolate is finely chopped throughout the smoothie, keeping some of the crunchy texture.
-Serve and top however you like. ie: coconut whipped cream, toasted coconut, chocolate coconut butter magic shell, etc.
___
•Tips/Substitutions: For a more robust coconut flavor, toast your coconut before blending. You can do this by spreading coconut on a baking sheet and broiling over low with the oven door cracked. Stir frequently and watch the entire time as it burns very quickly. Coconut extract will also add a stronger coconut flavor. The dates are used to naturally sweeten both drinks and they do add to the thickness. If you can’t find dates use your favorite liquid sweetener. If your dates are not fresh and soft you’ll want to soak them in water for about an hour. Drain the liquid and then remove the pit.

healthy_cravings • Toasted Ravioli Stuffed With Cultured Cashew Cheese •
- Source: http://www.olivesfordinner.com/2013/10/toasted-ravioli-stuffed-with-cultured.html/
_________________
- INGREDIENTS -
•For the dough:
2 1/2 cups semolina flour
1/2 cup white rice flour
1 TB Ener-G, whisked with 3/4 cup water and 2 TB olive oil
1/4 cup water
extra white rice flour, for dusting •For the filling:
2 cups of cultured cashew cheese, combined with 2 cups Daiya mozzarella shreds •For the sauce (enough for 12 ravioli):
1 TB Earth Balance
1 TB olive oil
4 shallots, sliced
4 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
6-8 crimini mushrooms, sliced
1/3 cup dry white wine
1 cup vegetable broth
1/2 cup walnut halves, slightly crushed
handful of chopped parsley
salt - METHOD -
•To make the pasta dough, mix the semolina and rice flours together in a Kitchen Aid mixer. Make a well in middle, then pour in Ener-G/water/olive oil mixture. Knead with the dough hook on low until evenly crumbly. •Slowly add in 1/8 cup water and process with the dough hook for 1 minute. Add in the rest of the water (1/8 cup) and knead for 1 min more. By this time, all of the dough should adhere together nicely, but still be a bit shaggy. •Continue to process the dough for about 2-3 minutes more. If needed, add 1-2 TB water to bring the dough together. After this time, the dough should be smooth and silky. If it is tough or shaggy, add 1-2 TB water and process for another minute. If it is sticky, add a bit more rice flour, only 1-2 teaspoons and process until smooth. •Once the dough is done, separate it into 3 pieces, then cover it with damp towel and allow it to rest for 20 minutes. During this time, the gluten will have relaxed a bit, making it easier to roll out. Keep the other spheres of dough under the damp towel while you make your ravioli. •Using a Norpro ravioli maker, follow these steps to make your ravioli. •A few tips I've learned:
Flour your work area with plenty of rice flour while rolling it out.
Roll the pasta spheres out into a long, thin piece, with the width being slightly wider than the pasta maker. This will allow you to fold the pasta over the top of the pasta maker nicely.
(Recipe continued below...)
4d
  •   healthy_cravings •You can use the leftover dough to make an additional 12 pieces of ravioli. •To boil the pasta, remove the desired amount of pasta from the freezer and allow to it to thaw. Bring a large pot of water to boil while you make your sauce. •To make your sauce, heat the vegan butter and olive oil together over medium-low heat. Add in the shallots and cook until softened, about 2 minutes. Throw in the garlic and saute for about 30 seconds, then add in the mushrooms and saute for 3 minutes more. •Next, turn the heat up to medium high. After a minute, add in the wine to deglaze the pan, stir, then add in the broth. Throw in the walnuts and allow to the sauce to slightly reduce under the lowest heat setting while you boil your pasta. •By now, your water should be at a full boil. Add a little salt and oil to the water, then slowly drop in half of the ravioli (6 pieces). The cold temperature of the pasta will likely cause the water to momentarily stop boiling. Just wait for it to return to a boil, then add in the other half of the ravioli. Boil for 3-4 minutes, flipping the pasta over once during the boil time. •Serve the ravioli with the sauce, sprinkling with salt, pepper and fresh parsley. 4d

healthy_cravings How do you handle others disciplining your child(ren)?
__________________________
Have you ever encountered a stranger, friend or family member who took it upon themselves to discipline your misbehaving youngster? How would you or how did you handle the situation?
•••••••••••••••••
What are your rules and guidelines for others (grandparents, parents, siblings, family friends, strangers etc.) when it comes to disciplining your child(ren)? Let me elaborate...
•••••••••••••••
• Do you allow other people to discipline your children? If so, what is and what is not allowed?
If not, what course of action do you allow until you are able to handle the situation?

  •   healthy_cravings THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR FEEDBACK. Interesting points from everyone. 4d

  •   alexis_mrsjohnson Wow this is a great topic I Must pose this one on my wall :) 4d
  •   tallya_ Hmmm...i dont recall a time my kids needed to be disciplined around others. If one does something that they shouldn't do I usually take them aside and have a talk about what they did, why, and why it wasn't ok. I dont think I've ever had a situation when someone felt that they needed to discipline my child. I love it when you post such topics, interesting to read others opinions and experience 4d
  •   itstarka I'm a child care provider and one of my parents has given me the green light to "spank". I do believe in spanking but my take on any type of discipline is that it MUST be done out of love if it is to be effective. I won't spank a child and I won't allow anyone to discipline my children (within reason) unless I'm sure there's a genuine love and concern there. This is why I am not an advocate for schoolhouse flogging... not everyone has a genuine love and concern for children. 4d
  •   maryratti When I was little, my dad would give permission for other people to spank me like the principal of the school and my next door neighbor when they were watching me. I remember not being comfortable with this at all, because I did not have trust built with them - it felt very violating to me as a child. . As a caregiver babysitter there are some clients that would allow me to spank and some that would not. When I was younger I did not mind spanking but as I got older I prefer for my clients to spank their children whereas I would handle either writing sentences or timeout or sometimes Tabasco as a consequence. It just depends on the dynamics of the family and what your own personal boundaries are. 2d

healthy_cravings For this child I prayed... Before she was even formed in my womb... I prayed over her health, mind, body, and soul. I prayed for her to be a Peacemaker.
I love this little girl to life and even in the midst of her tantrums and screams and my frustrations... I smile and thank God for her.

Because, someone out there is praying for what God has blessed me with... Someone has lost their child and is mourning... So, I never want to take my blessing for granted. I pray for those who are trying to conceive and those who have lost and are trying to pick back up the broken pieces. I pray that God gives you peace, patience, comfort and hope in your situation. healthy_cravings Side Note: My favorite Witch Hazel is the one shown in the picture: Humphreys Witch Hazel (Google to find where it's sold in stores or purchase at VitaCost.com)
___
1. Natural Astringent
High concentrations of tannins in witch hazel make it an excellent astringent which means it has the ability to remove excess oil from skin and shrink down pores. Health-wise, those who are exposed to lots of environmental pollutants may apply witch hazel to the face in order to reduce the amount of contaminants that enter pores and, consequently, the amount and severity of blemishes. Also, because astringents remove excess oil, regular use of witch hazel may further prevent blemishes, especially black heads which result from dried sebum build-up in pores. ••• 2. Fade Bruises and Blemishes
Witch hazel may also be used to treat blemishes already present on the face or other areas of the body. Apply witch hazel with a cotton ball or cosmetic pad to reduce irritation and appearance of acne or other inflammatory skin conditions. Witch hazel applied to bruises can also help to fade discoloration and speed up the healing process of any underlying damage. ••• 3. Brighten Around Eyes
The ability of witch hazel to tighten skin and reduce inflammation makes this an ideal natural remedy for treating discoloration and puffiness under and around eyes. Just make sure not to get any of this natural astringent on the eyes themselves as it will result in significant pain and lingering discomfort from dryness. ••• 4. Shrink Swollen Veins
Soak soft terry cloth in witch hazel and lay over skin affected by varicose veins to temporarily reduce swelling and pain. Also, remember to prop up the areas to be treated as high as possible. This will decrease blood pressure in swollen veins and maximize the effectiveness of your treatment. ••• 5. Stop Bleeding
Witch hazel naturally tightens skin and promotes faster healing. Apply organic witch hazel to minor cuts and scrapes to stop bleeding. Store-bought witch hazel also often contains isoproply alcohol which disinfects, making it a popular choice for cleansing wounds before bandaging. (Post is continued in the comments below...)

healthy_cravings Coconut water can be one of the healthiest beverages available but the choices you see on the store shelf can vary greatly in quality. But beware of the coconut water brands that are bad for you! Visit the link below to read the Food Babe's most recent expose on coconut water manufacturers and how to find a high quality alternative: http://bit.ly/1l3r61i

Here are the top choices if you're not drinking the water straight from the Young Thai Coconut: •Harmless Harvest (organic) - They source their young coconuts from small organic agroforestry farms that pay a fair wage to their workers. The coconuts are then frozen and shipped to the U.S. for packaging, after which they use HPP processing to kill bacteria and extend the shelf life to 60 days. Because it’s so minimally processed, some of the waters turn pink when the naturally occurring antioxidants or phenols are exposed to light – and you won’t find this in pasteurized coconut water. You can find this at Whole Foods and most natural food stores in the refrigerator section. •Juice Press (organic) - This water is totally raw. It’s not pasteurized or processed with HPP. Their coconuts are shipped frozen to the store and then they ship it fresh to you with a 3 or 4 day shelf life. •Exotic Superfoods (organic) – Another fave, this water is 100% organic and raw. It is not processed with any heat or HPP – but it’s kept frozen to preserve freshness. •Liquitera (organic) - This bottled raw coconut water is also organic, without any pasteurization. It’s only available at their stores in New York. •Vital Juice (organic) – It’s never heated or frozen, and it’s preserved with HPP, 100% organic and non-GMO project verified. It is currently only available at stores in Washington and Oregon with plans of expansion, and you can also order it online on Amazon. •Unoco (wild coconut) – Made from wild coconuts (not from a plantation) and processed with HPP without any additives. It’s only available in California right now. (Article Continued In The Comments Below...)

Three Oil Massage and Baldness •Another common issue people seem to be struggling with nowadays is baldness. This is probably one problem that has some of the widest varieties of remedies for, but most seem to have a very low success rate. Yes, there are many herbs and supplements that encourage hair growth, but none of them will work if you don’t get circulation to the scalp. •Dr. Christopher suggested that in addition to the usage of certain herbs, that it was important to massage the scalp. He suggested using the three oil massage and the Desert Herb Combination. •“To help restimulate hair growth, for two evenings massage scalp deeply with warm castor oil, apply hot, wet towel over head thirty minutes or more. Leave oil on all night. Next morning wash hair with pine tar soap or a good biodegradable soap and rinse. Wash again and rinse with tea made from this combination which contains equal parts of sagebrush, chaparral and yarrow. Massage well and leave tea in hair. The next two evenings do same procedure but use olive oil instead of castor oil and the next two evenings use wheat germ oil. Rest one night and repeat six days a week as needed. Use shoulder stands. Take one or two tablespoons of wheat germ oil morning and night, and also drink a cup of this tea made from distilled water, two times a day” [School of Natural Healing, pg.546]. •This should be enough to achieve results on its own. If you would like additional support, the mineral silica is the ultimate beauty mineral for hair, skin, teeth and nails. (Article continued below in comments...)

healthy_cravings Although I love my naturally thick, curly, and wavy hair... At times I do get a little frustrated with it and want to cut it clean off. Then someone talks me out of it. •••
One thing I struggle with (that comes with ease to other natural sistas) is styling my hair. I am quick to twist it up, do a wash and go (let it be Wild & Free) or just throw it up in a bun or head band and that's it. •••
I am now learning or should I say YouTubing styles to get the most out of my natural mane. One thing I am learning to do is S-T-R-E-T-C-H my fro with #banding so that I can enjoy my true length and not the drawled up mess it turns into once it dries completely.
___
A few (and I have many) of my favorite things to do/apply to my hair for scalp health, hair growth, and to seal in moisture are the following: ••••••
•Rose Water •Coconut Oil •Hemp Butter •Shea Butter •Avocado Oil •Mango Nut Butter •Wheat Germ Oil • Castor Oil •Argan Oil •Lavender Oil •Rosemary Oil •Tea Tree Oil (Scalp) •Jojoba Oil •Apple Cider Vinegar •Black Tea (Rinse) •Sea Salt Water (Rinse) •Extra-Virgin Olive Oil •Neem Oil (Scalp) •Dr. Bronner Castile Soap (Shampoo) •Giovanni Tea Tree Shampoo •Hair Steaming (Seal In Moisture) •15 Minute Circular Hair Massaging (Hair Growth) •Mini Twists (Hair Growth & Reduce Stress/Breakage)

healthy_cravings London Alexandra trying out her new ErgoBaby carrier. It was on sale at Nordstrom for $79... Regular price $120! You have to use your Nordstrom card to get the sale price.
•••••••••••••••••••••
Product Review: So far so good. It is very comfortable and there was hardly any stress on my back and shoulders and I carried her around with ease!
She fell asleep in it shortly after my mom took this picture. I will try it out for 2 weeks and hopefully I won't reconsider it.
Thank you all for your suggestions on which carrier to purchase. I really appreciate you all.

healthy_cravings What is iron and why do we need it?: Iron is a mineral needed by our bodies. Iron is a part of all cells and does many things in our bodies. For example, iron (as part of the protein hemoglobin) carries oxygen from our lungs throughout our bodies. Having too little hemoglobin is called anemia. Iron also helps our muscles store and use oxygen.
Iron is a part of many enzymes and is used in many cell functions. Enzymes help our bodies digest foods and also help with many other important reactions that occur within our bodies. When our bodies don't have enough iron, many parts of our bodies are affected.
___
Signs and Symptoms of Iron Deficiency:

Too little iron can impair body functions, but most physical signs and symptoms do not show up unless iron deficiency anemia occurs. Someone with early stages of iron deficiency may have no signs or symptoms. This is why it is important to screen for too little iron among high risk groups.
___
Signs of iron deficiency anemia include: •Feeling tired and weak
•Decreased work and school performance
•Slow cognitive and social development during childhood
•Difficulty maintaining body temperature
•Decreased immune function, which increases susceptibility to infection
•Glossitis (an inflamed tongue)
___

healthy_cravings Have you ever gone to a restaurant with the healthiest intentions? — a salad followed by grilled fish and steamed vegetables — only to find yourself halfway through a bacon cheeseburger and onion rings? Or, on the other hand, have you ever listened to everyone at your table order a salad with grilled chicken, only to hear yourself echo their order? As it turns out, eating is a contagious behavior. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine analyzed data from 32 years and found that your chances of becoming obese increase by 57 percent if you have a friend that’s obese — a chance that’s even greater than sharing genes.

According to researcher Dr. Nicholas Christakis, “You change your idea of what is an acceptable body type by looking at people around you.” So if your overweight friend orders dessert, you assume it’s okay to do the same; you’re changing your eating habits to mirror those of your overweight friends.

Taking it one step further, researchers are beginning to examine how eating patterns can be influenced, hypothesizing that each diner’s eating behavior mirrors the other’s back and forth. A study published in Plus One found that women tended to take bites of food at the same time, demonstrating behavioral mimicry. In the study, researchers observed 70 pairs of women who had never met share a meal; they found that mimicry was more pronounced in the beginning of the meal than at the end. The researchers believe that because the women were unacquainted, they attempted to bond by mirroring each other’s movements, in just the same way that we unconsciously mimic hand gestures and facial expressions when we try to socially connect.

Feeling peer pressure at work when you walk into the kitchen only to find another birthday cake for everyone to indulge in? It doesn’t mean you can’t join in on the festivities — stick with the three-bite rule and enjoy a little taste of the cake.

What if Mom is a “pusher”? My advice is to let her know that your intentions are not to hurt her feelings and that you love her food, but one serving is enough and you want to take the rest home for lunch or dinner tomorrow. Communication is key. (Continued Below...)
