garrett_chow "My friend was convinced that you know Californians miss home when they start talking about burritos. True enough, in-depth discussions about missing our burrito joints of choice would come up even more often than being apart from our families.

Burritos are a unifying part of the Californian experience — black, Asian, gay, poor, rich, or Ke$ha, you love a dank-ass burrito."

garrett_chow #sopro Here's what one can expect of the day--any day--with @ingambatours: Rise at a prescribed hour determined by the ride-schedule handed out at last night's dinner; eat a hearty, home-cooked breakfast by Morgano, the chef; don your head-to-toe InGamba Giordana kit which has been washed folded by the staff the night before; convene at the service course to view your immaculately dialed (washed and serviced each day) custom Pinarello Dogma; jump on one of the planet's most incredible roads; ride said road with incredible company; be fed ride-food prepared by Raul the soigneur at a prescribed mid-ride rest-stop; Helder the mechanic has your Pinarello in a bike-stand and gives you your rain kit from your gear-bag as you arrive; take a small detour to be shown the beautiful piazza by Giorgio the ride-guide (he gives running, mid-ride historical info if you so choose); get a sticky-bottle from Jose the soigneur (if you so choose); finish the last of your amazing ride; take a shower at a country inn; eat a post-ride pre-dinner under the veranda at sunset, and while reflecting on the day's events; get an hour long massage by Raul, the soigneur; hop in the InGamba team cars which have been loaded and are waiting to take you to an(other) incredible dinner of local cuisine and wines; make a quick stop to meet Bartali's mechanic who tells the stories of having attended 51 years of Giro's di Italia; sleep by +/- 02:00; rise, repeat... The Donkey Week ride total will be about 700Km. Yes, it is hard. But made a supreme joy--and entirely do-able--by the Pro-ness of Joao's staff, and his years of professional racer's insight into the rider's life. I'm in absolute awe and honor to be a part of this. 1w

garrett_chow 'Eat up the miles. Drink in the culture', is the @InGambaTours credo, and we're doing exactly that. This morning's 51Km coffee/recovery ride after yesterday's 205Km stage left the remainder of the day for the group to lunch in Siena, and then dine in Firenze.

We're here for the depart of tomorrow's stage from Firenze to Assisi. The 200Km stage will gain 2375M and honors Gino Bartali, who rode the same route during WWII smuggling false papers used to save the lives of Italian Jews.
Joao does an incredible job in crafting meaningful experiences, with InGamba's focus on culture, both on and off the bike.

garrett_chow Heretofore, the 'carrot at the end of the stick' that I'd conjure when I need that extra kick over a climb, and at kilometer 197, was a Mexican Coke. In a glass bottle. Cane sugar, and not the impending high-fructose crap.
These days--Donkey Week--I think of Raul. From kilometer 1. And not in /that/ way, but with the daily post-ride massage. Joao first met Raul as a first-year Pro on Portuguese team Troia Marisco. That's Raul on the right, and Joao on the left. Raul is the 1994 Portuguese National Road Champion, and today works as a soigneur for Saxo Tinkoff (and still turns screws on the bicycle!). Fourteen years in the profession means a pair of /magic/ hands, and that if there were a 'Love' (not Like) button on Instagram all the Donkeys would be double-tapping it. In zone 6.

garrett_chow It'd be an understatement to say that a thousand parts come together in the run-up to Donkey Week riders' arrival in Lecchi in Chianti. Framesets from @Pinarelloofficial; @Sramracing gruppos and Zipp wheelsets; @Girocycling helmets and shoes; kits from @Giordanacyclingapparel; @Sciconbags saddle and travel bags; @Osmonutrition... Watching D.S. @Joaisme orchestrate and conduct logistics is a marvel. It's /gotta/ be incredibly gratifying therefore, to step back and see his guests swing a leg over the top-tube on this, the first ride. And now, the real 'work' begins... 2w
