emilyaharrington @mattsegal on the 2nd pitch of La Voie de Marie, a wild traversing pitch that ended with him ripping a decent sized block off the wall, taking a fairly lengthy whipper, thus slamming me (mostly my face) into the wall and producing a few cuts and bruises on my chin and cheek. Thankfully I'm fine and he just bought me a beer so life is still good. We try again tomorrow!! #BonVerdon #verticalorigins @thenorthface @natgeo 12h

emilyaharrington Today we climbed "La Demande". Established in 1967 - 330 meters of crazy limestone crack and chimney climbing! Real adventure it was. This photo of @mattsegal was taken after he told me he "never drops things off the mountain" but before he dropped his climbing shoe off of pitch 10. Bummer dude. #verdongorge #verticalorigins @natgeo @thenorthface 1d

emilyaharrington First day climbing in the #verdongorge! Spectacular setting, bullet limestone, and massive birds soaring by our heads. Ominous clouds threatened to engulf us in darkness all day (but they didn't) and I got super scared again, which is pretty much normal for me cuz I'm afraid of heights. Thanks for the photo @etteloc of @mattsegal and I climbing a nails 5.11 that I almost fell on. #verticalorigins @natgeo @thenorthface 3d
  •   etteloc it'll climb. 3d
  •   brobrablahblah @smpxyz, instead of climbing at BIW on Thursday, let's go to Verdon! 3d
  •   justinwebster How do you cope with your fear of heights when you are already half way up? 3d
  •   the_next_step I've climbed in the Verdon just once, for 5 days - one of my fav trips ever!! If you get a chance, do Le Demande - it's only 6a at the crux, but it climbs the full height of the gorge, and is oh so good!! 3d
  •   dubbkop Afraid of heights? I guess climbing is a good way to get over that huh? 3d
  •   ericboe1980 Looks so amazing! 2d
  •   smpxyz Okay @brobrablahblah As long as we fly first class too! 2d
  •   mercedes_sol Maravilloso! 2d

emilyaharrington And then the clouds parted and we had our first look at the #VerdonGorge. I think it's gonna be just ok here. Maybe a little more than ok. Maybe. #verticalorigins @thenorthface @natgeo @ladzinski @etteloc @andrewbisharat @mattsegal 3d

emilyaharrington #latergram to skiing in #Alaska with my favorite mountain guide Saying goodbye to this guy is always hard, but was particularly tough today after an emotional time facing the tragic events on #Everest yesterday. @adrianballinger is headed to Nepal to guide the mountain for his 7th season. Be strong and safe AB! I'll be thinking good thoughts for everyone there this season and remembering those who were lost. Thanks to everyone for all the kind words and support in the past few days. emilyaharrington Super sad to hear about the avalanche in the Khumbu Ice Fall on Mount Everest today, a massive accident that took the lives of over a dozen Sherpa high altitude workers, one of which was Ankaji. He was on our team in 2012, he helped rope fix to the summit that year and became the first person to summit of the season. I climbed with him on the mountain, and even went through the ice fall with him during one of our rotations. I spent time getting to know him and we stayed in touch after. He was an incredibly talented and strong climber as well as a great individual. Always smiling, always stoked. You were one of the best and you will be missed Ankaji. Thinking of all my Sherpa friends who lost loved ones today. 6d
  •   canyonrat RIP 6d
  •   laidlawphoto A huge blow to a very tight community. Sending my deepest sympathies. 6d
  •   biipiing rip brother! 6d
  •   takemetoantarctica @emilyaharrington totally will check out the funds! Thanks for sharing. That's the least we can do.. I just read article in Outside mag that median income in their country is $540 per year......... 6d
  •   emilyaharrington @takemetoantarctica yes but they generally make much more than that. That's why being a high altitude worker is such a desired job for a Sherpa, and why it's so devastating when a family loses their main source of income. 6d
  •   takemetoantarctica Yeah, it does say that high altitude workers make anywhere from 2 to 6k per season. But still. Prayers to their families and climbers Such a loss!... My first thought when I read the news last night if you were ok.. I thought in one of your last posts you mentioned you were heading out there. 6d

Also thanks to @blackopsvaldez @akswierk @3ollivierboys @adrianballinger and everyone else who made it all so special. See you next year! 1w

emilyaharrington As you can probably see, @adrianballinger hates his job. He should probably start figuring out a #planB. #heliski #ak #bestdaysever @blackopsvaldez @alpenglowexpeditions 2w
