drandallblythe The waves were small (waist high at max) & basically breaking onshore tonight at sunset. No surf to ride all day long, but that's ok, I got a lot of writing done. Then after dinner I sat in the shore break and got beaten up for a half hour or so. I love the spirals you see by the sea in some of the plants, shells, & the waves themselves- the Māori people in New Zealand call the spiral the koru- it's based on a curled fern frond there, but is lots of places in nature if you just look. Eternal motion & and a central point from whence all things come. 1d

drandallblythe The last original Ramone, Tommy Ramone (second from right), has died, & with him the last of one of the main roots of all modern punk/hc/and metal as we know it today. The importance of the Ramones in the history of underground music cannot be overstated- before the Sex Pistols, The Clash, Black Flag and waaaaaaay before any speed/thrash metal band, the Ramones were blowing minds with LOUD, FAST, AGGRESSIVE music. Although to the calloused ears of modern youth who have grown up listening to crust punk/grind core/speed & thrash metal/and even some of the more aggressive music on commercial radio, the Ramones might sound like fast pop, at the time they started playing out in NYC at CBGB/Max's Kansas City (1974) they were something that had never ever been seen or heard before. The first time my band played CBGB, I was completely emotionally overwhelmed- "Man, the FREAKING RAMONES started out here!" I thought as I stood on stage- I almost started crying. Without that band, the tempo of underground music would have never reached the speed that it has today- there were a bunch of glam bands & hippies at that time, & (yeeeech) disco was big- the Ramones came along & blasted everyone straight out of the water. No Ramones= no lamb of god, or any of the other music most fans of my band listen to. Metal existed, but it was not until punk rock kicked it right square in the ass with a combat boot that things got FAST & AGGRESSIVE. Tommy passed away from cancer yesterday in Queens, NYC, at the age of 62. Rest in peace, bro, & thank you for helping to create the music that changed and saved my life. #BEATONTHEBRATBEATONTHEBRATBEATONTHEBRATWITHABASEBALLBAT!!!!OOOOOOOHYEEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHH,OHOHOOHHHHH!!!!!! 2d

drandallblythe My first attempt at wave photography. The swell was decent earlier, then it just started breaking right on the shore, so I decided to ditch the board & try & get some photos from inside a wave. I got beat up pretty good in the shore break, but got a pretty cool picture. I want to photograph bigger waves when there are breaking further outside- the problem with that is that I also want to be riding those waves. #catch22 2d

drandallblythe And finally, the face of relief as I rode into shore in the sloppy mess. But this is also the face of confusion, as I couldn't hear what my buddy was yelling at me. He was yelling something that sounded like "Tube Throttle! Dude, TUBE THROTTLE!!!!" I came in & asked him what he he was saying- there was no tube, & I had no throttle, so I was confused. He was saying BLUE BOTTLE- that's another name for the Portugese Man o' war, & he had just seen a big one near where I was surfing. If you don't know what one of those are, it means "time to get the hell out of the water!" It was a good day riding chaotic waves, but I gotta go back to work, & F getting hit by a blue bottle. Enjoy yer day, y'all! 4d

  •   rudigreyvenstein Blue bottles aren't man o'wars though? Otherwise I've survived many encounters! Unless we get different Blue bottles here in SA. 3d
  •   drandallblythe @rudigreyvenstein Yes, we call man o' wars blue bottles. They won't kill you (unless you are allergic or a small child or old and infirm), at least not directly. If one wraps around your head/neck/spine, it can cause temporary paralysis though, which is NOT a good situation in the ocean, hahahaha 3d
  •   rudigreyvenstein Oh! I thought man o' wars were those huge deadly ones. Took a few minutes to reply to this mostly because of HOLY CRAP RANDY BLYTHE JUST REPLIED! 3d
  •   v1k1ng_skull @drandallblythe No blue bottles today in Wrightsville, but I did run into a nice sized shark in the surf while body boarding with my kids! 3d

drandallblythe Here we see me moving from a more suave pensive look to a flat out OH SHIT expression. I had made the first drop, surfed it out, but it shot me into the inside where another smaller but more chaotic wave appeared & I dropped in again, this time with ZERO control. This is the face of FEAR, of the "this is gonna suck really soon" state of mind. Some how I made it through this one too & kept on riding. 4d

  •   django_boy Good to see you enjoying your life man. The lyrics you and mark write speak so much to me and my own life, as well as my views on politics. Despite you guys being on a little vacation LOG is always gonna be one of my favorite bands. The way you've put your life on display for everyone to see from killedalphia until now is a pretty ballsy move, but that's what is awesome about you. I can feel it in your lyrics that the anger only comes from the stupidity and pointlessness of human decision, more importantly powerful humans and their decisions. You are a good man at heart and you are one of my idols . I know you think not many people think that of you but I admire what you have done through the alcoholic stage to being on trial for murder and now living your life for yourself. It takes a lot of character not to turn back to that bottle in times of hardship but you are focusing on all the good in life and that's what makes you a good man. Enjoy your lengthy vacation! Can't wait to read the book! 4d

drandallblythe I don't mind telling y'all that today the ocean was ROUGH. The sea was not playing nicely, the wind was a brutal 15 mph with gusts up to 20- the waves were big, & it was total chaos- no way to tell what was a set wave or not, or even when or which direction a wave would break. They just kinda would appear, suddenly jack up, & if you lucky enough to be in the right spot, you could just try & hang on. It was like surfing in a washing machine. I did pretty well today, & took some steep-ass drops & made it, like this one. I had decided to try my Gopro on time lapse mode for the first time, & as I looked at the photos a while ago, I realized I make some funny-ass faces when the ocean gets big & doesn't behave. Here's my pensive look- "Hmmm, this might not turn out so well" 4d

drandallblythe Wild flowers I picked & let loose in the sea earlier today- paddled out today out of respect for Ben Carlson, the 32 year old life guard who drowned yesterday in Manhattan Beach, California, while attempting to rescue a swimmer struggling in big waves. A huge wave hit them both- the man who Ben went to help rescue made it to shore- Ben did not. The National Weather Service issued a warning yesterday about dangerous rip currents & big surf along SoCal beaches yesterday. I posted here about rip currents a while back, about how they drown swimmers every year. When you go out to swim in bad conditions, you endanger not only yourself, but anyone else who may try to help you as well. Ben was a lifeguard for 15 years & a strong swimmer- he still died. Almost everyday I see people who should not be in the water clowning around- the ocean is not a swimming pool. You must respect her, because if you don't you will die, or maybe someone else will try to save you. RIP Ben Carlson- rest easy bro. 6d
  •   den_anzalone @drandallblythe I hope you'll read this words. Yesterday night I saw the LOG film As The Palaces Burn and it left to me a big message in my heart. I saw you not as musicians, as my favourite band, but as persons, common persons like me. I think that especially you, Randy are an example of a man that doesn't regret the bad past but looks over and over the lines, and you are a real man now. So I hope to be like you, not as musician, but as man. The road is full of fucking problems, but people like you makes my days. And you give me strenght. So, keep on doing shows, keep on surfing! Because you don't have any faults of nothing. Hope to see you around when you'll come to Italy. A big hug to you and your family. :) 6d

drandallblythe This 4th of July weekend was a blast w/my wife & our friend Erin. Erin is one of the funniest people I know & has the greatest stories- she should quit her job and become a stand-up comedian. I'd already taught my wife to paddleboard in the backwater, & when Erin decided to come to the beach for 'Murica Day, she told my wife she wanted to try it too. I'm always stoked to teach my friends anything to do with the water, so I started getting hyped, but this teaching session required a bit of thought on my & Erin's part- as you can see, she only has one leg. I never really think about this, because Erin is just Erin & doesn't make a big deal about having one leg, but a little preparation was appropriate. A paddleboard on the water is not a stable surface, and we were not in the best conditions that day- really swift out going current, & 13 mph winds with gusts up to 15 is WORK, even for someone who does it all the time- I was exhausted by the end of the day. We discussed options for standing up, & she built a leg from spare parts that could get wet. Except for my brother, who grew up at the beach, she stood up quicker than anyone else I have taught to do this. Maintaining balance in those conditions was difficult, because we hadn't quite figured out the right kind of knee to use- this was a running knee, & was too loose. She busted her ass quite a few times, and we were laughing like loons. She's getting a water proof knee soon, & we'll nail it next time- I can see she has the skill & balance, just the wrong tool for the job right now. I'm not writing this as a Hallmark feel good kind of post about how handicapped people can do still do things- I already know this, & it's fucking patronizing. Handicapped people don't need pity or little pats on the back. I'm writing this because I didn't hear "Is it hard to do?" out of Erin's mouth. I heard "Let's do this!"- this is the kind of person I like to associate with. I often hear people whining & complaining about bullshit that holds them back from doing the simplest things- the only thing holding them back in their shitty attitude. My friend has one leg & is game for a tough challenge- what's your excuse? 1w

  •   bigbabyhuey78 After being locked up in the Czech Republic and watching the total lack of coverage because American Media is bullshit and Randy doesn't fit the image they can glorify as a victim, the fact he still can feel this way is real patriotism. #respect 1w
  •   drandallblythe @bigbabyhuey78 I love my country & it's people, not its media nor the government fat cats. 1w
  •   necrophagus @drandallblythe That last statement of yours made me think. I guess I would even say the same about my country (Germany). However, I strongly believe that if I would meet every single one of my people I'm sure I'd actually dislike the majority of them and I wouldn't be surprised if this would be the same for you. And I also think the majority of them would also dislike you for being a member of subculture and what it stands for. That being said what makes us love our societies as what they are is the fact that they harbour and tolerate a sufficient amount of people such as ourselves that we can choose to be around with so it makes our lives worth living. Wouldn't you agree? Am I making sense at all ;-)? 1w
  •   drandallblythe @necrophagus I agree with your very well written statement in many ways, especially the part about our societies being free enough for people like us to openly live the way we wish. I have been in many places where it is much, much more difficult to be involved with any subculture, including some countries where standing out as "different" is enough to land you in jail. However, I disagree about disliking the majority of people if I were able to meet them- I actually believe that if I can spend a little time one on one with almost anyone from any country, if I can drop my prejudices and they can drop theirs, then we will be able to find some common ground as humans & learn to get along. Of course, getting both myself & others to drop pre-conceived notions about the way others live is very, very hard- politics, religion, our families, our society as a whole shapes out beliefs in very subtle ways. It is a life long process for me to continue trying to remain open minded. 1w
  •   necrophagus @drandallblythe Thanks for your comprehensive answer! Yes, you are right. If more people would be willing to try to find some common ground the world would be a much more peaceful place. However, growing older (I'm 38) I find that only a small minority is actually willing and able to do so, especially when it comes to questioning your own traditions and beliefs. Tolerance only works both ways. I always try to be tolerant when I first meet someone but I don't give it for free if you know what I mean. So yeah, I think we pretty much agree, here. Cheers mate and thanks for sharing your views of the world through this and other channels! 1w

drandallblythe While it's nowhere near as big as yesterday (double overhead+ at times), there is no lighting now & the winds are not blowing 30+mph, hahaha. Offshore breeze is holding for now, & I'm still getting occasional chest to head high waves this morning- went out at 7, taking a break now- looking for a barrel but I don't think it's gonna happen. I hope all you on the South East Coast are ok- Arthur doesn't look like he's torn us up too bad- anyone in Hatteras/OBX got a report for me? Spending a lot of my youth on the coasts of VA & NC, I have a love/hate relationship with hurricanes. I love to witness the power & majesty of what the sea does when it gets big (as well as the waves it brings me), but I hate to see people lose their homes or worse. The ocean will humble you, & you must respect her. It's all part of living by the sea though- gotta take the good with the bad. A big "stay safe in the water" to all my brothers & sisters who ride- go get your stoke on! 1w

drandallblythe Hurricane Arthur is gaining strength, & is predicted to reach category 2- while there were some moments of good surf earlier this morning (sets were coming in overhead) there was constant lighting (as you can see the sky is rather ominous), which made me say "hmmmmm.....maybe not such a good idea". Electrocuted while surfing? NOT INTO IT. Plus it was just really sloppy & unorganized. Then it calmed down for a few minutes, wind switched to offshore, waves started glassing up, & me & my bro from Hawaii were about to go out, but decided to give it a few minutes first just in case- good thing, because a band started coming through. Now wind & rain has started to really pick up, & shit is mad hectic. Looks like today is a bust, as it's only supposed to get worse as the day goes on. There were some dudes out surfing near the crib- hope they got in before the band hit. Also I hope the two dummies with boards who obviously had never surfed before came in- they were getting WORKED & not catching shit. I suppose they did not understand that you have to go through & PAST the breakers in order to catch a wave. They were just sitting in the impact zone, floundering & their asses kicked. Good way to drown. BTW, if you've never surfed, a hurricane ain't the best time to try it for the first time. I definitely won't go out to help a 30 year old grommet in this bullshit. Hope y'all can swim, boys... The dude in this picture was ripping pretty hard, even in the slop & lightning- this is a pretty sizeable bail. Hope he didn't belly-flop. Ouch. Looks like it's a lot of writing for me today & dawn patrol tomorrow for hopefully a nice glassy wave or two. 2w

drandallblythe Finally he let go, & flew off into some bushes. We watched him for a while- as soon as he flew into the bushes behind my crib, all the neighborhood birds went absolutely berserk & started raising hell. It was like an Alfred Hitchcock movie- they knew a new predator had arrived, & were flying all over the place & sounding off the alarm. We approached the owl to see if he would make the defensive movements & sounds of an owl sensing danger (aka us- HUMANS)- he did, & as we got closer, he flew up from the bushes and into the trees behind my crib. I hope he has made his nest there, & wish him good hunting. I'm a little worried about the hurricane forming down in FL right now- this little dude has only been in the wild for a couple of days now, so I hope he's set himself up a decent crib to weather the storm. I'll go look for him tomorrow evening. It is an intense thing to witness a wild animal experience freedom for the very first time. So beautiful to see things return to where they belong, to help keep the balance of nature going, despite mankind's best attempts to destroy it. 2w

drandallblythe The other owl that got released that day was put on a tree branch- he just hopped up there no problem and chilled for a bit before flying higher into the tree. This guy didn't go so easy- he had a firm bite on the glove, & didn't want to let go- he was pretty pissed off about being touched. The baby owls had as little human contact as possible at the shelter- we didn't want them to imprint on us, to associate humans with getting food. The baby owls had to learn to hunt live mice in the cage themselves, so that they could fend for themselves in the wild. This guy was definitely not stoked on humans. This is very good. 2w

drandallblythe A few weeks ago I posted a photo of four baby Eastern Screech Owls in a cage at the bird shelter I bring fish to sometimes. 3 of them were from the same nest, 1 of them was from a different one. We don't know what happened to their mothers, but the birds were brought to the shelter to see if they would survive. All four have, and two reached a good enough weight to be released the other day- the other two are right behind them and will be let go soon. Luckily one of them was released in my back yard, so I got to take photos. Here's this guy- he was NOT stoked about being put in a kitty carrier, then toted over to my crib, then pulled outta the carrier by a heavy gloved hand. But this is the last time a human will ever touch him- it's time for him to be free. 2w
