clashandharmony I watched #kuwtk the other night (cue judgement) and @kimkardashian brought up a topic which in her own words she always viewed as "someone else's battle" - RACISM.
I'm lucky that my parents chose to raise us in a country where we are fortunate to have access to many things. My siblings and I were constantly reminded of just how lucky we were, but out of home we did face racism on many levels. As a young girl I would get teased because I was darker than the other kids, that I ate different food and did different things.
I feel that growing up with so many different cultures helps us to be more understanding of each other and surely as we grow older, we become wiser and know what is wrong and right and so then pass that on to the future generations. I feel that if that is the case, we should be on the road to a world without racism however this is not the case. It is still very prevalent in our society. The other day my son, who loves soccer wanted to join some other children at our local park who were playing. Being an only child is hard and Cai has a great confidence and often makes lots of friends from children he just meets at the playground. However these children just laughed and teased him saying things like "he looks like a Chinese person". Luckily, Cai has already learnt about many countries and races from our travels, from school and even through his love of football and actually didn't realise why they were teasing him because to him that did not seem like an insult. Although it could have gone the wrong way, words and actions like that could have hurt his feelings, made him feel less than he was just because if his looks, I feel that as parents we have a responsibility to make sure we don't teach our children or influence them to be racist. We need to stand up and stop thinking it's not still around and say #notoracism

  •   myathletika I'm in Australia and my mother came from Greece in the 70's and back then being Greek was literally the most disgusting thing to Australians - yet now in 2014 Greeks are embraced and form part of a huge culture in Australia; yet now we have "issues" with Indians and Chinese. It seems whatever is unknown always causes issues and I can't wait for the day to have everyone accepted as one. @clashandharmony xxx 1w
  •   clashandharmony @kateelizabeth probably why they came up with such a pathetic insult! Longest caption in the world and there are so many typos! aahhhh OCD overdrive 1w
  •   clashandharmony @myathletika exactly, knowledge and respect is powerful! 1w
  •   madhouseartistry Well it's definitely a problem she's dealing with now!!! 5d
  •   clashandharmony @madhouseartistry if you watch the episode she experiences it first hand and addresses the issue. She also writes about it on her blog and speaks about using her status to bring awareness about it. 5d
  •   madhouseartistry @clashandharmony That's great, she has the platform to do it 5d
