  • chrisogden A Sunday pondering... When I photograph "critters" (which I do for "fun"), I try hard to be mindful of not "stressing" out the animals. Some photographers have caused the closure of certain National WIldlife Refuge areas as they try to spook birds to "blast off" for the great shot - Yuck. The ethics are pretty clear to me in the case where critters become afraid of me; when I "unnaturally" disturb them (although I guess I should admit that I haven't minded spooking crows feeding on a carcass in the middle of the road). It's less clear to me in the case of the apex predator in the Arctic: the Polar Bear.

  • chrisogden Did this encounter stress the bear? Perhaps, in the psychological sense, she was frustrated by not getting to snack on Roberts. But was it any more or less than her hunting a seal and failing? That said, if this video were to lead some enterprising folks to start installing "cubes" for tourists around Svalbard, I could certainly see it could be "bad," potentially having a harmful impact on ursus maritimus' well being. Although would it be any different than similar effects our expedition ship and/or zodiacs had last fall (ie, the bears were certainly aware and curious about our presence)? Is it just a case of sheer numbers? An isolated case has no measurable effect, yet should humans come en masse and hop into "cubes," would the polar bear populations be hurt?   1mon
  • chrisogden As travelling to every nook and cranny on the earth gets more common, do our rules necessarily have to change (to "protect" creatures and things from our loving them to death)? Is it "right" to create an elitist situation where those with special/early access get to witness/experience amazements first hand?

There was lots of hubbub a couple of weeks ago when the Russian youth snuck up the Egyptian pyramids and posted their resultant images online. Does anyone really think that political insiders and/or baksheesh payers aren't afforded sanctioned privileges? When I was in the Yucatan many years ago, I was able to climb and crawl over every bit of Chichén Itzá. I understand that today only "special" people are still allowed to climb to the top of El Castillo.

    Hmmmmm......
What say you? (this is a square crop of my SLR shot (which I rarely post in instagram) - the full image is available at www.facebook.com/ChrisOgden1)   1mon
