timlaman Photo by @TimLaman on assignment for @NatGeo in Gunung Palung National Park, Borneo. To get unique views of the rain forest, I like to get up into the canopy. Here I am climbing a large wild durian tree to rig remote cameras in hopes of capturing orangutans that come to feed. #Indonesia, #Borneo, #savegporangutans, @TimLaman, @thephotosociety, #rainforest, savegporangutans.org 3d

timlaman Photo by @TimLaman on assignment for @NatGeo in Gunung Palung National Park, Borneo. I climbed a large tree to get a canopy view of the fruiting trees like this Dipterocarpus with its branches covered in orchids. The rain forest canopy if full of life, including orangutans, and Gunung Palung is experiencing a mass fruiting event this year, making it a very exciting time to photograph here. #Indonesia, #Borneo, #savegporangutans, @TimLaman, @thephotosociety, #rainforest, savegporangutans.org 1w

timlaman This is what happens to a cute little pet baby orangutan when they grow up into a big, handsome but dangerous adult.  If he has been in captivity too long before arriving at a rehab center, he can’t really learn the skills to live in the wild, and is destined for a sad life behind bars.  Please don’t keep orangutans as pets.  Let them live in the wild!  Photo by @TimLaman on assignment for @NatGeo in Indonesia. #orangutan, @thephotosociety. 2w

timlaman When you don’t have a mom, you need a friend you can talk to and hug.  Photo by @TimLaman on assignment for @NatGeo of captive orangutans at the International Animal Rescue center in Ketapang, Indonesia. These baby orangutans don’t have their mom’s as they were captured from the wild and sold for pets, and their mom’s probably killed.  But lucky for them they have been confiscated from owners and taken to the International Animal Rescue center, where they can socialize with other orangutans for comfort and learn from each other and from trainers the skills they need to survive in the wild.  When they are old enough, they may have a chance to get released into a forest sanctuary. #Borneo, #Orangutan, @TimLaman, @thephotosociety 2w

timlaman Photo by @TimLaman on assignment for @NatGeo at the International Animal Rescue center in Ketapang, West Kalimantan, Indonesia.  These baby orangutans are being cared for at this center, and are being taken by wheelbarrow from their night cages to a forest play area where they will spend their day learning skills to survive in the wild. Unfortunately, many baby orangutans are still kept illegally as pets, and obtained by killing their mothers in the wild.  When confiscated, they end up at centers like this that do their best to care for them and train them for living in the wild some day.  It is a severe challenge, but some of them may make it to live in the wild. #Borneo, #Orangutan, @TimLaman, @thephotosociety 2w

timlaman Photo by @TimLaman on assignment for @NatGeo at the Tuanan Research Site, Borneo.  Here you see the “person of the forest”. That’s what “orangutan” means in Indonesian.  This is the wild orangutan Niko, a large male who likes to travel on the ground a lot, which is unusual for most orangutans, who usually stay in the trees.  He is looking up though, looking for fruit in the trees.  #Borneo, #orangutan, @TimLaman, @thephotosociety 3w

timlaman Photo by @TimLaman on assignment for @NatGeo at the Tuanan Research Site, Borneo.  In the wild, baby orangutans like this one year old are never far from their mothers.  They stay with their mother for at least eight years, and learn everything they need to know about what to eat and how to survive in the forest from them. timlaman Photo by @TimLaman on assignment for @NatGeo at the Tuanan Research Site, Borneo. In the peat swamps of Borneo, the water is stained red from tannins in the leaves. So it’s like we are walking through tea all day as we try to follow and photograph orangutans. #Borneo, #orangutan, @TimLaman, @thephotosociety, @TBFrost, @waysusanto 4w

timlaman Photo by @TimLaman on assignment for @NatGeo in Borneo. If you want to get a feeling of how closely we are related to orangutans, take a good look at their hands…. timlaman Photo by @TimLaman on assignment for @NatGeo in Borneo. Boardwalk….Borneo style…. A single plank wide and heading into the peat swamp forest at Tuanan research site for 1.6 km. This boardwalk is so slippery when it rains, that we took off our boots and walked in our socks which gave us the best grip. But this was the fastest way to get deep into the forest from where we headed off on side trails through the swamp to find and photograph wild orangutans. #Indonesia, #Borneo, #orangutan, @TimLaman, @thephotosociety, @TBFrost, @waysusanto. 4w

timlaman Photo by @TimLaman on assignment for @NatGeo in Borneo. Photographing orangutans can mean a lot of waiting for them to do something interesting. Sometimes orangutans rest for hours up in the trees. During such lulls when it is hard to find an ant-free spot to sit on the ground, team members Wahyu Susanto (@waysusanto) and Trevor Frost (@TBFrost) rig small hammocks to hang out in while keeping a close eye on the orangutan. #Indonesia, #Borneo, #orangutan, @TimLaman, @thephotosociety. 4w

timlaman Photo by @TimLaman on assignment for @NatGeo in Borneo. On our very first day in the forest at the Tuanan Orangutan Research Project, we encountered this rugged adult male Bornean Orangutan. His scarred upper lip and damaged right cheek flange show the rough life of adult male orangutans, who have to fight for territory or mates with other males. It’s a tough life in the jungle, but this guy seems to have the attitude to deal with it. #Indonesia, #Kalimantan, #orangutan, @TimLaman, @thephotosociety. 1mon

timlaman Photo by @TimLaman of @RussLaman blasting the powder in the trees. Surprise spring blizzard at Mammoth Mountain, CA on April 25 found my son Russell and I in the right place at the right time for an awesome powder skiing day and photo shoot for @Patagonia. I love exploring the outdoors with my kids! 21 inches of snow recorded that day, and quite the contrast to the rain forests of Indonesia, which I'll be back in soon! @TimLaman, #skiing, #SierraNevada. 2mon

timlaman Photo by @TimLaman on assignment for @NatGeo in Sumatra.  A beautiful but dangerous pit viper.  While out following wild Sumatran Orangutans, one of our team members from the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Program came within a meter of bumping into this snake that was resting at waist level in the rain forest of Batang Toru.  Fortunately he spotted it just in time…. #Sumatra, #Indonesia, @TimLaman, @thephotosociety, #snake 3mon
